I have decided to get my mare a made to measure saddle for various reasons, one of which being i am disabled. Getting something to fit my mare who has withers,a flattish back and big shoulders has been difficult and the synthetic saddle she has been in really just doesn't fit anymore
I am in Essex and wondered if anyone has any tips for anyone near enough to come out,who isn't wildly expensive and who will listen to what i want!( G.P or event, huge soft grippy knee rolls, thigh block, preferably with parachute) I like the sound of Redrae, any other recommendations or tips of who to avoid?? PMs welcome too! Thanks!

Have a look at wow saddles. I have exactly the same problem with my mare having HUGE shoulders and being very wide but also has a reasonably high wither profile! Everything slips back on her apart from a dressage or show saddle that will sit behind the shoulder. The wow panel is separate to the flap (sounds like you would like the GP fixed block) so the panel sits behind the shoulder and the flap is lifted and sits over the shoulder not blocking it. People either love or hate them so could be worth a try!

To be honest, it's worth approaching any saddler whose saddles you like - explaining what you need and asking the question. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Years ago, I had a saddle custom made and it didn't cost any extra at all. As the saddler said - at the end of the day, it's the same materials....

OH had a saddle made to measure by Liz from Mill Saddlery, Stowupland. We have a horse who is lop sided, nothing would fit. OH liked the knee rolls from Ideal Impala, and the seat from an Albion I think and other bits from a Bates. So we had an Ideal OH saddle combining everything he wanted. It fitted from day one and is the comfiest saddle ever.

Chris Gohl who I ended up getting a made to measure Black Country GP saddle from.

I love that saddle so much, it is the loveliest saddle I think I have ever ridden in. It cost me just under £1k and that included the initial measuring, the first fitting, the second fitting and riding. It also means I get all work on it required later on for half price as I bought a saddle with him.

He was fantastic, honest and extremely good with my horse. Couldn't recommend him highly enough.
