I buy mag ox from naturalhorsesupplies online. They do two, one is more concentrated. The lower is 85%. I'm just about to buy some more and wondered if it would make much of a diff if I bought the cheaper one since the concentrate is still pretty high. I feed for feet mainly. Any light shed on this would be lovely

I also buy mine from natural horse suplies & I always buy the higher concentrate (mainly because I've always used it & I don't want to change things as it's working for me) but a fellow livery has always bought the lower concentrate & hasn't had a problem.
She's got 4 horses & they're all on the 85% stuff.
So it might be worth a try

Thanks for that! I'm a bit like you in that im afraid to change. Want to know some solid stuff before I actually. Hoping someone on here will tell me!

Certainly, I am no expert but my belief was that you were supposed to feed slightly more per 100kg of the lower concentrate. I think it was something like 3g/100kg of the lower vs 2g/100kg of the higher concentrate. I thought they had that detail on the Natural Horse Supplies website - although, it is a long time since I looked, so could be wrong.

Hello! Mag ox has been the bane of my life this week! My lad arrived home from Rockley last Wednesday and I'd planned to buy the 25kg sack in Mole Valley, except they were closed on the jubilee Tuesday. No problem, figured I'd get it from Scats, a week later I have just taken delivery of my sack of cal mag! My poor boy is quite footy having been without for a week!

Anyway the point of all this is that cal mag is 82% and is perfectly sufficient for what you need. Nic has told me to feed 1 level 50ML scoop of it a day. The 25kg bag cost me the princely sum of £17.40 and will last approximately a year.

The downside to cal mag compared to all the others is that it supposedly tastes very bitter so some horses won't eat it. I've not had any problems and I feed coolstance copra with it to cover the taste. Nic feeds it to all her rehab horses with the copra and they all eat it.

I don't know if the natural horse supplies 85% one tastes as strong as cal mag or not though so can't help there, but if you can get an agricultural farm merchants to supply you with cal mag it works just the same and costs far less than the other options! :)

Progressive earth on eBay are cheaper Than natural horse supplies and cal mag is from what I believe less magnesium with calcium ??

Cal mag is 82% strength and is calcined magnesite. It may not be the nicest tasting way of doing it but it really isn't that much less magnesium, and provided you have your calcium and magnesium levels balanced in the whole diet it certainly isn't an issue in any way.

Admittedly I'm new to the whole barefoot world but this is what Nic feeds the horses at Rockley and it works hence my faith in it. :)

I asked Nic for clarification about the whole mag ox variation and have been told.. cal mag and pure mag ox are (essentially) the same form of magnesium - ie MgO

Calmag is a less refined (80% pure MgO), "pure" MgO is 98%+ MgO

BUT they have more or less the same amount of magnesium in (60%-ish)...

So you need to feed the same amount whichever form you choose.

"Pure" MgO is less gritty and good for fussy horses but even though its "pure" it only contains the same amount of magnesium as cal mag, so you need to feed just as much.

I'm afraid I don't understand the technical stuff behind it all but I'm happy with that as I know what's been working for my horse. :)

Bikerchickone I feed mag oz to mine in the form off equine America magnitude. I feed 1 scoop but as my lad is going bare foot soon ( x rays tomoz) can I feed more?

Hi TMG, yes you need to be feeding a lot more than you'll be getting from the calmer supplements. Ideally a barefoot horse should be getting 25g of magnesium a day, so with all of the mag ox supplements that you get you should be feeding 50g a day. I'm giving my lad one level 50ml scoop of cal mag a day which is the same thing.

If you have either Scats or Mole Valley Farmers near you you'll be able to buy the cal mag that I got, which is easily the cheapest way to go. You'll need to give something like the coolstance copra though to disguise the taste of it though!

I can't remember off hand how much mag those supplements contain but I think it's only something like about 5 or 6g of magnesium per scoop if you're lucky!

Hope that makes sense! :) x

Thanks, oh yes I can visit mole valley, is the stuff u use a powder than? Iv ordered coolstance copra for him already so getting there :)
also is it just normal table salt from tescos to feed?

Ah you're so lucky! Mole Valley is much cheaper than Scats which is all I've got!

Cal mag comes in a brown bag and is a lot smaller than your average 20kg feed sack even though it's 25kg because it is a powder and looks much the same as any other powdered supplements. They'll tell you it's not intended for horses if you explain you want it for a horse but honestly it's fine :)

I use normal table salt and I've also given both my horses one of those Himalayan rock salt licks and I'm amazed at how much they use them!

I seem to have become the potion woman on my yard with all my odd things going into his feeds but the end result is so worth it!

When are you taking shoes off? I'll keep my fingers crossed that all goes well for you. :) x

Bikerchickone your such a star :)
well x rays tomoz but I think the way he had his feet cut back so short I'm going to leave him around 6 weeks to grow a bit off foot than the trimmer will come out and he wants to take his shoes off. I hope it works as if it don't he may have a one way ticket out off my yard.. Iv promised him new feet so will do my best : D

Ha ha. I don't know about that, I'm just the messenger lol!

Sounds like you have everything under control so I hope it all works out for both of you. I've seen some pretty amazing transformations whilst visiting Nic so I'm very positive about the whole barefoot thing.

The nicest thing for me today was that although my boy is quite footy from not having had his supplements since he got home a week ago my osteopath treated him today and said that he felt better than he ever has in the 4 years she's known him, to the point where if she'd been blindfolded to treat him she wouldn't have known it was him! And this was with him clearly uncomfortable too.

I hope you'll post lots of pictures as you go along! If you want to see pics of my boy he's Dom on the Rockley blog. King of the muck heap bless him! ;)
