I've recently had to put a horse on magnesium supplementation for a Mg deficiency (and that's a whole other thread!)
Initially I just whacked him on some NAF Magic as that's what I had a tub of and it worked in removing almost completely all his symptoms.

So, I thought I'd put him on straight magnesium oxide.

Now it's helped but not as well as the Magic. And he's also lost a bit of weight, which I'm connecting to the magox as I've seen its use recommended for laminitic/EMS ponies as part of weight management.

So what am I doing wrong?

Youre not doing anything wrong - it’s likely that the 2 different forms of magnesium differ in quality. How it’s been treated to be extracted, the purity level could be different. Mag ox aids the metabolism to burn stored fat, so its usual to expect weight loss. But if its rapid weight loss that needs slowing-down by reducing dose.

I’ll have a look at the naf one to see the ingredients. Ah! The naf magic has a whole host of other powerful ingredients. Gut health, anti-inflammatory herbs, b vitamins from brewers yeast helps the gut too. So the naf supplement will have less mag per spoonful, than just straight mag ox. It’s likely if youre giving the same spoonful amount of mag ox as you were giving of the magic, that youve increased the mag ox dose by double, hence you noticing weight loss.
If you want to stick with mag ox, half the spoonful amount you were giving of magic.
If you notice symptoms that were relieved by magic are creeping back in with just straight mag ox, switch back to using magic. That product has a whole host of other beneficial ingredients.

Thanks all.
He was getting 3 level scoops of magic twice a day (75mg X 2) which I had dropped to 50mg X 2/day as his symptoms had decreased significantly. He's now getting 14g a day as the bag said 2g/100kg and he's approx 750kg
