I was picking out his hooves yesterday evening like I normally do, and I pulled a bit of dead frog off then I saw 4 maggots fall out, onto the floor. So I scrubbed it out with warm soapy water and applied purple spray as didn't have anything else antiseptic. I have been applying pine tar spray for about a week now because of the dry and then suddenly wet weather.
What should I do carry on scrubbing it out or is there a frog saver product that would work. I haven't seen any maggots since..thanks

Hibi or tri scrub or cooled boiled salty water is the best to clean it out. Make sure you look for any holes or something that they can hide in, if nothing? Id keep spraying with iodine or purple spray ?

OOH that must have been a bit of a grim find, I'm alright with most things but finding maggots where they shouldn't be turns my stomach.
Agree with the hibiscrub or salts just to make sure the site is clean.

It was pretty gross, wasn't expecting it either didn't even know you could get them in horses hooves!! Thank you I will wash again with hibiscrub.

Check for an abscess draining, and see if you can open the maggoty area and expose it to the air. If you are not confident about digging around in the frog, maybe ask your farrier to check it out. We are seeing a crop of abscesses amongst our oldies at the moment, no idea why.

Pick feet out daily and brush out all the crevices and the problem shouldn’t recur. My gelding had them a few times (he also had them in his sheath which was truly revolting!). It’s warm and smelly, ideal for flies to lay eggs when they are resting.

Thank you, it seems to be fine now can't see any abscess or anything and he isn't lame. I'll keep on brushing out and applying purple spray.

That sounds absolutely grim! I pick out his feet daily anyway so might start doing it twice daily. Thank you

Happened to my old boy; was picking out feet and this horrid white thing started wriggling.

When the yard had stopped going round I rang the farrier. He said he'd seen three already that week and it was because of the weather at that time which was similar to now i.e. a hot dry summer where the hoof gets really dry and cracked and then stuff can get in. Happens particularly when horses are turned out with sheep apparently.

He said to get a saline spray and use that.

I've seen a whole frog peel off leaving white maggots under it!

The owner was heaving in the corner by this point so I got the hoof pick under the bits of frog to scrape out what I could and then we got purple spray on it - all we had. Only ever happened once but it was vile

That sounds disgusting! Mine wasn't that bad thankfulness.

My horse had maggots in his foot once, he did have a persistent case of central sulcus thrush but gave it a through clean & never saw them again & the thrush cleared up as well x

If he'll stand with his hoof in a bucket see if you can do that with some salt water to soak in places you can't spot / reach.
I'd do all 4 just to be on the safe side.

My farrier found them in one of mine once, I was mortified.

This happened to my previous horse who was wearing a pad, and its typical at this time of the year. I think the farrier put some silicone between the foot and the pad next time he shod the horse to prevent unauthorised access ;).

There was no indication the horse knew the maggots were there, no foot stamping or anything.
