Maggots in Melonomas

Ive put this in vets aswell, but more peopple come in here!!.....


I found some fly/maggot eggs in the melonoma on my mares dock today. I got them all out and cleaned it all with water, but is there anything I can do or put on it to stop this happening again?

Can only think to put some vaseline on to stop the flies. Must have been awful to find them. Yuk!!

Yep, it was gross!! Mum had to walk away coz she was going to be sick!!

Ewwww Id of been sick too. Id clean it with hibiscrub maybe and keep an eye on it.

My vet recommends that we cover our mare's melanomas in sudocrem to protect them from flies, dirt etc. It seems to work a treat.

Hmm, thats interesting, Ive been told to put nothing on it!!
I did put alot of purple spray on it tonight though.

Ill go with sudocrem tomorrow.

Ive not heard of this, is it ok to use on melonomas? Can you get if from saddleries?

Tack shops may sell it, but is cheaper from agriculteral stores , it is used for sheep to stop fly strike, i always keep a pot to put on wounds to stop flies, but i have no idea about wether you can use it on melanomas though, just thought it would keep the flies off.

I've just had a maggot saga, and sorted it out with hibiscrub, dried area, and then put tea tree oil on - plus he's had antibiotics as it was likely I hadn't popped the lot out. Just five days on, it's healing up really well. Thank god.

We have just dealt with maggots in a geldings sheath, we washed out with dilute hibi and then repeated it the next day. Usually if you put something mildly astringent (like tea tree oil) on/around the problem area it kills the blighterrs off! obv with sheep we use crovect or spot on to kill any, and vetrazine or click to prevent fly strike, but you cant use these on horses!
The fly cream is very good - its called 'summer fly cream' and is bright yellow, its like a thick paste-y stuff just like fly repellent cream, and should be fine to put on your girls melenoma's.
Other than that, just keeping the area really clean with a mild wash every day will prevent the flies from being attracted.

This happened to my mare a couple of weeks ago, the vet gave me antibiotics just to be on the safe side, bute to keep her comfy and told me to wash the area twice a day with hibiscrub which I am doing religiously. I might also try the sudocrem idea as she has one melanoma that is ulcerating and is quite open and sore looking although she is now much happier in herself.
