Puppy has a habit of stashing his toys outside. His favourite toy was hidden in the garden til I found it and washed it and left it on the maiden to dry. Thought all was well til I spotted loads of maggots on the toy. The fly eggs must have survived the hot wash and hatched. I've relegated toys to a safe place outside til I can kill the maggots and bin the toys. I've rewashed all the clothes. Kept puppy out of the way but one of the blighters must have fallen onto him. I've given him a thorough groom and couldn't see any others. Is there anything else I should be doing? I know how quickly fly strike can affect sheep but can dogs be affected in the same way?
Panicking slightly (and itching from the grossness!!!)

I'm a little confused as to why there would be 'maggots' in or on a toy. When flies lay their eggs on sheep, for instance, the maggots eat the sheep. All egg laying insects deposit their eggs on a host upon which the maggot can feed. Where, I'm wondering, was the food value in a toy, for the maggots?

The best household chemical which will kill both eggs and the maggots themselves, is Dettol, neat.

Alec.

Our labs hoover up maggots if they find a carcass with them on them so don't worry. Gross though, I agree.

That just made me want to be sick! Bloody labrador's are absolute pigs!
Mine was rifling through a bin bag in which i found maggots recently and O/H's hid a dead mouse in his bed which was really lovely....

It is the only thing I don't like about them. They don't specifically pick the maggots off, you understand, they just eat the whole thing.

Alec some of pups food had gotten onto the toy so I assume that why. They were definitely maggots I could see them wriggling!! Ick

Anyway I've calmed down now and realise how slightly ridiculous I was being posting this last night!

There's a high protein level in maggots. Lord, but some people are picky. :D

Maggots, if you can find them are a delicacy for some of those on survival courses!

The hospital I was first taken to is the leading centre in the area for use of maggots. The sister said had the leg started to rot (!!) they would have used maggots! I was glad they just debrided instead!
