For those contemplating a calmer for their horses I can really recommend Magic - I have had my horse on this for 12 months now and I have to say, it is a fantastic product. I started him on it a fortnight before I left my last yard, and at first I thought it was the change of yard, that had calmed him down as he went from a very busy 45 horse yard on a corner stable of an aisle where everything passed him to a small yard rented from a top SJ in the area. The new yard only had about ten horses on it and it was fantastic. The hacking in the area is brilliant, and we went from a location with busy traffic (an hour and half hack could see up to about 75 cars whereas at the new yard you were lucky if you saw eight in total!) But we ended up moving from there to the yard next door (not through any fault of me and my horse) and again it started off as a very calm and small yard (although its much busier now).
Roll on from June last year when he moved to the current yard. About five weeks ago I decided to reduce his calmer over about eight days from one scoop to half a scoop with a view to taking him off it. We had our first spin 180 degrees on the road a couple of days afterwards, so I started to increase it back over the period of about 7 or 8 days. Then after a few days of being on the normal dosage again I reduced it a second time and he started behaving badly again, spinning and doing what I describe as a 'panicky walk' where his heads up and he starts walking so fast he actually paces!
So he's back on it and has been on it ever since. I think our little 'experiment' proves that the stuff works really well! He still shies at things but this is very occasionally and he calms down so much quicker than before, and his shies are half of what they used to be. He is more reasonable about accepting new things in his environment, and has been introduced to cows, sheep, pigs and chickens whilst at the new yard and hasn't batted an eyelid.
This and the stuff that the vets give you after a period of box rest that contains mares milk (about £3.50 per sachet) are fantastic products, the magnesium off ebay didn't do anything!
