Just read the posts and am now sat here in tears. Sending you both lots og vibes, I don't think you are clutching at straws at all. If he isn't in pain then surely a couple of days won't matter? From what I know of you from on here I know you always put the horses welfare first and wouldn't let any of them suffer. If he is well in himself and eating and in no pain then surely the vet can't PTS? xxxxx

It's such a difficult one. But surely after yesterdays op, he is bound to be extremely sore? Obviously, i know nothing about what he done, but i dont think i would be judging it so soon. But the vets will know what they're talking about, so...
But then you say they "flap/panic", so i'd be tempted to get a second opinion? maybe phone someone else in the morning?
But certainly dont be guilted or feel bullied into doing anything by the vets. He's YOUR horse.
When Murphy broke his leg, he was on 3 legs for quite a while. But after 7 months, he came sound and was back in work for 6 years (before being put to sleep for cushing's-lami

), so it was all worth it.
Whatever happens, i'm sure you'll do the right thing for Magic.

Helen, sorry in advance for long post, hope this helps you? When Higgs had GS he was at Leahurst and had major colic surgey in the early hours of Wednesday morning. they took a biopsy as they suspected it was caused by GS. Barry Edwards wanted to put Higgs to sleep there and then especially as he was 17.2 and IDxWB so not likely to cope with getting really thin. Derek Knottenbelt and Dylan said to give it a go as he was bright in himself, eating and drinking only small amounts but hey he shouldn't have been able to do either. I went with my gut instinct and said to give him a chance on the proviso if he took a turn for the worse and was in pain then to put to sleep. Confirmed as GS on the Friday. Visited every day bar one (was in too much of a mess to cope
frown.gif
) but took the decision on the Sunday to put Higgs down as there was just something different about him. Someone told me "you will know when the time is right to put him down" and its true. I am so glad I gave him a chance, if I hadn't I would still be like "what if.............." as it is I know we did the best for him but it wasn't to be. Hardest decision I've had to make. Please please go with your gut instinct on this, you will know if and when the time comes to have Magic PTS. As long as he isn't suffering then he has a chance. PM me at any time. Sue xxxxx

Hugs, prayers & good wishes being sent.

If he's bright in himself & eating then I'd insist on pain relief & give him more time. Can you get a second opinion? At the end of the day he's your horse not Lisa's & it doesn't sound to me like she can really say it's a welfare issue as he doesn't seem to be suffering.

Oh (((hugs)))

I would agree with Pidge... you *know* when it's time to give up. When Cat was so ill, the newmarket vet gave me the chance to pts or carry on, & we carried on as he *looked* like he wanted to.

But a few weeks later, even though he was initially getting better, something changed in his face. His whole demeanour was different & I could tell that he'd had enough.

You are a sensitive person, and you'll know yourself if Magic wants to carry on so you should go with your instincts. I don't really think the vet's being very fair on you - one thing I was very grateful for with Cat was that none of the vets ever tried to pressurise me.

Everything crossed for you & him.

Thanks Nari

My trainer suggested getting in touch with Harpbury who apparently have a fantastic vet school (I didnt know). Will ring them tomorrow. However, I phoned Bristol Vets yesterday who refused to discuss it, unless it was referred. Wish there was a vet surgeon on HHO.

I agree that if he's eating then he cant be in pain. Bright as a button the vets said. You and everyone else have given me strength to face them and fight another day.

Thank you.

Helen - Using this forum so your phone won't wake you if you've gone to sleep. As my earlier text, intend coming to your yard about noon Saturday. However text or phone at any time of day or night if it would help if I came earlier, to push the wheelbarrows, muck out, etc?

Please do not let yourself be bullied into making the decision... like others have said, he is bound to be sore after the op and if you are in any doubt at all GET A SECOND OPINION! I cannot emphasize this enough, as I think many people are worried about insulting their vets but this is your decision NOT theirs!

A very close friend of mine had a horse who was lame and was discovered to have a fractured shoulder. The first vet (her vet at the time) said to PTS immediately! She was not 100% happy with this decision because the mare could still weight bare although was lame and sought the 2nd opinion of a vet at Leahurst. The mare had 6 months box rest, 2 months on a stable sized piece of field and now has two stunning foals to show for her owner's persistence! The mare is now 20 (she was 16 when she fractured her shoulder) and can gallop around the field with any horse and leave them behind. She can never be ridden again, but she is doing so well!

Thanks Lou x and thank you All for your wonderful messages of support.

Have been by the phone all afternoon waiting for 'The' call. Still nothing - but no news is hopefully good news. The vet is the only one on call today which is why I cant get hold of her. She was going to assess this afternoon and ring me.

Soooo, another nail biting night. Just poured glass of Pinotage so intend to sleep !

Thanks again for the vibes - they really do mean alot.

Helen x
