magic

Most 'calmers' as sold by companies are actually just magnesium.

Magnesium deficiency is very common and some of the symptoms are muscular twitching, pain, hoof pain and agitation.

The 'calmers' do not actually calm the horse - they provide the missing mineral (magnesium) and therefore return the horse to their normal state.

Magnitude, Magic and a host of other 'calmers' are just over priced magnesium - often in a cheap form that is unpalatable without all the fillers and sweeteners they add.

You can buy heavy grade, 85% magnesium oxide (the most absorbable form) from here

If a horse responds positively to the use of a magnesium based 'calmer' then you can be certain that it is deficient in a mineral that is essential for over 300 actions in the body and is crying out for help.

The whole concept of companies selling 'calmers' and pretending they've magically calmed the horse, while keeping the owner in the dark as to what was wrong in the first place really makes me sick

I have used it, it did make a difference, but Star has now decided that she doesn't like the taste of it.

Wot Oberon says!

Janette - Star may have simply decided that she is no longer deficient in magnesium and does not, at the moment, need it. Is it cold where you are? When it warms up again the grass will go low in magnesium again and Star may well eat it again.

Star has been on box rest for 2 months, recovering from a suspensory ligament injury. No grass at all.
After our first 'Extremely Exciting' walk up and down the farm yard for 10 minutes, I thought she might benefit from some Naf Magic....... She thought otherwise. No choice in taking the Sedalin though (apart from a lot of spitting and tongue waving :D )

my horses are on it YES it does work well , tho mine do not like the taste unless i mix something like airways + or something nice to mask it

I used on our part bred Arab and it worked well for his first inhand show the first horse I've known to lick it off the floor :/ don't think he could get enough I it he then spent the rest of the licking it off me because he had managed to dribble it everywhere originally x

My guess would be that your horse is almost certainly magnesium deficient, most horses do not like the taste and have to have it in food.

Do your purse a favour, buy magnesium oxide and feed him the same weight of that instead.

Yes we figured that when he first came we had him on a diet with magnesium in then not 100% sure why(as he's not all mine) his diet was switched to something for weight gain as he wa very tubby when he came to us he us now back on his original diet of mollichaff calmer as the mare he is with needs it too x

basically she has had every measure u can give for a stroppy mare apart from a major op and nothing has worked. she is still a bit to stroppy and stressed and i dont no what to do for the best now

also she wont eat it mixed in with her calm and condition.
at wits end with this bloody horse. still love her tho

What else do you feed her?

Star improved no end for being taken off cubes, and put onto Alpha A and balancer. Much more relaxed.
She's now on the molasses free Hi fi, I'm getting as much sugar out of her diet as I can. I'll see what the effect of that is when I finally climb back aboard. (Not sure when that will be though.... :( )

I use it on my ex-racer & it does def make a difference. He is stroppier & spookier if we run out, and laid back when on it.

We need something stronger for comps, although I haven't found out what yet!
