Has anyone experienced this & what we’re the main symptoms ?

I’m suspicious our mare might be - she’s often super sensitive to touch (front end ie. Head, neck, shoulders) - will turn her head completely away or walk away.

She can jump at noises & even slight movements by us - as if she’s frightened of being hit :-(

Some days worse than others. Calm in stable til we approach, then can get anxious & turn away. But, if we just ignore her & stand still she will approach us & sometimes let us fuss her etc

Coats a bit dull & dry, hasn’t got any soft glossy coat yet but that could be time of year/ change of coat ?

Were at a loss so now it’s a case of elimination ..
Did you feed electrolytes or just a magnesium supplement (if so, which one) ? She’s already on salt.
Thank you

That could be a lot of things, has anything else already been tested? If not, then like SP I'd run a blood test. How old is she?

I have had to research vitamins and minerals in humans for myself, and understand that magnesium testing in blood is notoriously inaccurate, so much so that the results are unhelpful.

I would simply try on a supplement. If it helps, keep it. If it makes her worse, stop it.

It may be worth having ovaries scanned.

I agree that the horse should have a blood screening just to see , loads of things could cause this including muscle discomfort horse with extreme tension in the muscle fascia often hate being touched , ovaries , the list is endless .
However it’s easy enough to get some magnesium from progressive earth and try that the one I had who was magnesium sensitive showed change very quickly when we added it to his feed .

For me this would be a classic case for Tom Beech (The Osteopathic Vet) to have a look at. He assesses the whole horse, particularly diet, which conventional vets don't often do - but he can also do the conventional stuff so you get all bases covered in one.

She’s 15
You definitely need to speak to your vet and discuss getting a general blood check done. This is unlikely to be a deficiency in one mineral as the grazing and hay in this country,.as well as commercial feeds , tend to provide a l variety of minerals.

This sounds more like she is getting too much magnesium, they only need 6 %. My mare is on mag free diet and calmers.

Could be too much magnesium more like. Horses only need 6% magnesium if they are over this, things happen. MAgneseium is in many things like haylage etc a

My mare went like this on just mere pony nuts in a treat ball while she was recovering box rest.
Scared of every thing inc
Putting head collar on
touching her
moving her rugs on her back
trying to groom her
even people walking past her after holding my stirrup for me as per video
No one could touch her with out snorting- backing away- whites of the eyes- being anywhere near her.

When the mega spooking started she had equivite nuts other supplements

I worked with a company and we gradually reduced her magnesium, which meant
No Equivite
NO nuts
No magic or horse first calmer and more

I just thought a few nuts in a treat ball would not hurt, this reaction started 2 days after having the huts. after it got to the 100% reactions 1 week later I took the nuts out the ball and changed to the Dengi grass pellets and saw improvement from day 2 after but took 3 weeks to get to a reasonable point.

It was an upsetting time seeing my lovely mare so scared of me and others, reacting like she has been beaten up, hating anyone moving her rug etc. As soon as headcollar touched her she pulled back and ran off. Here are two incidents of her for you to see if this is similar.

To those sceptics no there was no electric shock, this happened every time we touched her I will send you my video
