I've got a gelding who's a nightmare when I take him away from our mare, and he's spooky to ride, global herbs rig calm worked wonders but I've just had a baby and I don't really want to pay £29 a month for a tub of it whilst I'm living on my maternity pay. I've heard magnesium oxide is good and I can get it for £10 on eBay. Has anyone used this and does it really calm them down?
 
Yes and yes - but only if they are deficient to begin with. I knew my soil was low on magnesium as I had had a soil test, but then I am told that most of this country is short of magnesium, hence the dairy cows who suffer from staggers.
Always worth trying IMO - it is cheap enough and takes effect within a couple of weeks. And is the active ingredient in a lot of proprietory calmers.
(My information is that magnesium blocks the over production of adrenaline. A horse who is short of Mg will be runing on adrenaline, spooking at things he really ought to be able to cope with and wasting a lot of energy in so doing. It transformed my horse)
 
Yes it definitely makes a difference to my mare, I wasn't sure but then I ran out for a week and she went a bit wild :-/

I am also trying Angus Castus now which is supposed to be good for hormonal mares and also riggy geldings (aka 'monks pepper' or 'chasteberry'), so could be worth a go as well? I believe it is one of the ingredients in rigcalm. It smells strong, my mare struggled to eat it at first but I reduced the amounts slightly and she doesn't mind it now (which is good as I bought the big bag!).

I get both from progressive earth on eBay and its cheap.

I didn't really appreciate the gradual improvement it made in 2 of mine, until I ran out for a week :eek:

Now I make sure I have an order placed in plenty of time. I buy it from Pro-earth from E-bay and cannot fault their customer service or prices!
 
Yes you would use less of the stronger one and some horses apparently will not eat the 85% as it is a bit more gritty, but cheaper, mine didn't even notice it.

P.s. meant to say Agnus Castus not Angus... darned predictive text!
 
HUGE unbelieveable difference in my horse within 10 days of using Mag Ox... Bought it at £4 a kilo and give 40g a day. He now is simple to turn , doesn't barge, and stands still when tied up. Have tried taking him off it and he goes right back to being rude. For 8p or so a day it's so worth it. Mst calmers are magnesium based and it was my vet who told me to try it.

If not, I bought 20kg of calcined magnesite (about 80% MgO - that's what the cheaper progressive earth one is) for £16 from my local feed merchant. Need to feed more of it as is less pure, but works just as well. One of mine wouldn't eat it though, so switched to above and had no issues with fussy horse since.
