I have a very excitable and nervous horse, previous to owning him he went from home to home and not treated too well, he is full of life and energy but also panicks alot by sweating up when only on a 30 minute hack and constantly pooing! He continues to come on leaps and bounds in the six months that I have owned him, he is no longer head shy, he is easy to catch, loves fuss etc but I just want to combat the panic element he seems to work himself up into. He was previously raced all over the place, did cross country etc and I have toned all that down by just pleasure riding, hacking etc and he has a lovely life with 3 other horses in a large field. Thinking about if magnesium would help but never used it before, don't want a calmer as such as not sure about the other ingredients but thinking of pure magnesium on a daily basis. He doesn't have solid food at moment so can't add it to food so would need a liquid I could give him every day in syringe. Looking for peoples thoughts on this? thanks

You can buy liquid magnesium in the guise of a calmer in liquid form.

The pure magnesium tends to come in powder form.

I would also add 25g salt a day (more if sweating) and also give him Yea-sacc to keep his tummy happy and see if that helps his anxiety.

You can mix these in a feed which won't cause problems, such as Fast Fibre or a unmolassed hay chaff.

Fennel seed is also very tasty and reduces bloat and settles the stomach, which may be helpful for your boy.

You could mix magnesium with water to syringe? Id just give a handful of HiFi light or simlilar though. He wont get any more lively with that.
Equine Americas is good £19 for 6 months worth (i think) and you need such a tiny amount its easy to mix with minimum feed

Testing your forage to find out how much calcium and how much magnesium is in it.

Or just feed it and see if it helps.

Magnesium is a safe mineral to feed blindly, as they can excrete it in their urine easily and it doesn't deplete other minerals.

I wonder if feeding him magnesium, if he is not deficient, would unbalance something else in his diet. I know calcium/magnesium can be purchased in tablet form for human consumption. Just a thought.

I feed magnesium, and I have no idea if he is deficiant or not, but saying that I use the powder. I have been using it for 4 weeks and in the time he has been on box rest and did no kill me or himself which I would have expected. I started to lunge him as he is now back in work and he seemed really calm!! (He is a total nut job been passed from piller to post all his like, I am the longest home he has ever had at 1 1/2 and he is 8) So fingers crossed this has helped him, the main reason for putting mine on it is that it is brilliant for their feet!!

Thanks sounds good, very similar to mine, he is 15 but you wouldn't guess, he behaves like a baby and he has been from home to home but he will be with me now for the rest of his life. What brand do you use?
