i have been advised to try magnetic boots on my mare who has a strained tendon to enhance circulation and aid healing.. should i just buy a single one for the injured leg or am i better to buy 2 to keep them the same?

Well first .

You will get certain people who are against them saying they don't work etc.

Personally I would buy two. I like the harpley ones.

This way in the winter you can use them as leg warmers too as well as to wicker away dampness from their legs.

I have the bell ones - knee - canon bone ones.
here is the link

ohh iv heard it all before from ppl who say they are a waste of money etc but iv used the premier equine ones on my arthritic veteran for years and they make a massive difference to her!

i am thinking two are better than one.. any other recommendations appreciated :)

I use them and have always thought they make a noticeable difference whether it be for circulation, healing or puffy legs and have always used two but maybe more because I thought like when bandaging you should do both legs.

I used the bio flow ones on my lad when he did his suspensory! Wether they helped or not who knows but I felt better trying them! I also use 2!

They 'work' probably because they keep the area warm, it is scientifically impossible for them to work as stated in the litrature, I consulted a neuro surgeon, a vet and a physio who told me the same, they don't work. BUT someone people state that they do. I'm going to trust science on this one :D

I think the advice given when you buy the magnets is that they shouldn't be used on areas that there is already heat and/or swelling, which I think there would be in a tendon sprain? I wouldn't use unless advised to do so by a vet, and even then I'd be dubious.

Mine is just recovering (hoepfully!) from a swollen tendon, and had 3 weeks of ice cold spa therapy to help it. You want to keep tendons cool, not hot, they have a good enough blood supply as it is.

I have spoken to my vet and he said they will do no harm so could be worth a try! i have gone with the bioflow ones so hopefully they will arrive next week :)

Dont know who told you tendons have a good blood supply :s tendons and ligaments both have very poor blood supply. all the websites i have looked at from researching about my horses injury talk about it..

example: http://www.athletic-animals.com/tendon.htm

says: Tendon and ligament injuries take a long time to heal (12-18 months is not uncommon), and there is a reasonably high risk of recurrence unless management of the injury is first class right from the time it occurs. The reasons for this include the facts that tendon tissues have a very poor blood supply, making healing slow.

another one iv just read says: a tendons purpose is to firmly attach a muscle to the bone. Tendons do not have a good supply of blood, so they lack the source of oxygen and nutrients that would allow faster healing.

and it was the first thing my vet said when he explained what was going on with her.

I've got the bio flow brushing boots that my old mate rides in when she is stiff.
I would always get two as you want to be even both sides of the body.

I'm going to get the harpers hock wraps for her for an early exmas pressie as its her hocks that have djd.

I also have the Bio flow (always use two) My vet doesn't think they do anything but my old YO used them on a horse that broke down and her vet (a cynical miserable German ;)) was really impressed with the speed of recovery.

As already said I wouldn't use them where heat could do more damage but I'm pretty open minded.

My OH used to borrow them after football and wore them on his calves. His physio guy asked him what he had been doing as his muscles were recovering much quicker and 'felt different'......
