I recently posted in veterinary section regarding my 23 year old Section D who has been sweating every day even in light rugs with a trace clip. He had a wet mane and wet rugs every morning and also a skin infection causing him to be very itchy with scabs. I had the vet check and it is not lice but similar to rain scald. I also made the decision to have my boy tested for cushings disease given the constant sweating and the fact that he was very down in himself. My vet agreed that this was not normal and enocuraged the test.
I had to wait a week for the blood tests to be done and in that time i had a brainwave! I bought magnetic chaps in August for my lad due to his arthritis. I put them on him for a few hours, building this up gradually. I chose the chaps so that they would also keep his legs warm during the winter. After 6 weeks i had to return the boots as the magnets had shattered. The manufacturer said that the magnets had broken due to the heat of the horse. (He has always been a warm horse). After remembering this i decided to take his boots off. He had been wearing them on his fronts during the night and backs during the day.
After removing the boots i noticed an immediate change. My horse was completely dry the next morning and has been since. I have not put the boots back on him and he has not sweat up at all. He is also back to his self and is bright as a button again.
Bloods were taken on Tuesday and i mentioned to my vet about the boots. She said that she had never heard of this but thought it may be possible that the magnets were affecting the balance.
I have had the results of the blood tests back today and they are normal. My boy doesnt have cushings which is a relief as he has some other issues we have had to contend with lately!
It appears too much of a coincidence that the sweating has stopped since i removed the boots.
I intend to buy some more magnetic boots which aren't chaps and i will use them for much less periods of time as i do believe the magnetic therapy helped with the arthritis however i thought it may be of interest for those who use magnets for longer periods of time.
