Has anyone used magnetic boots for SDFT injury?

I have read good things about the healing properties of magnetic therapy but I'm concerned that leaving something on the leg overnight will heat it which is the complete opposite of what we're trying to achieve.

Obviously I will consult my vet and ask what he thinks, just wanted to see what you guys thought.

Thank you! :-)

Try a Bonner Bandage instead and only use a magnetic one after the leg has cooled down and settled. You only use a BB for 20 minutes at a time but the healing effect it gives for hours afterwards is very good.

Thank you.

Sorry, should have said, the injury is about 6 months old but she is obviously still on a rehab programme for it. Just wondered if the magnets would aid full healing but not sure if the heating thing is an issue.

The vet said not to use boots of any kind when riding (as long as she's not prone to knocking herself, which she's not) as we need to keep the tendons as cool as possible so unsure as to whether the magnetic boots being left on overnight will cause more harm than good....?

They will create heat - so the best thing would be to put them on anotehr part of the body. Magnets don;t have to be against the damaged area- so you could use magnetic overreach boots, tendon boots on other legs, a magnetic blanket. i would strongly advise not to use bandages of any kind as you need to keep it cool and allow it to gain its own strength. My horse damaged a tendon racing. 4 years on that leg is seriously strong. I never use leg wraps - the sports medicine kind as they create resistance in the tendon and cause strain. if you do need to wear boots for jumping then use lightweight ones, the airflow ones are great.

i was worried about leaving the magnetic boots on overnight as well so now i put them on my horse when i get to the yard and leave them on while i do the jobs, so far he's not had any problems and does seem to be helping him (not sure exactly how though). i do notice when i take them off his legs are warm where the magnets have built up the heat but a few minutes after coming off they cool down again.

When my mare damaged her tendons I put magnetic boots on her hind legs, I still use them now as she has had an Sacroiliac injury, I regularly leave them on her hinds overnight (between 10 - 11 hrs) with no adverse effects.

Just what I thought Bosworth, thanks. Just nice for a bit of reassurance!

She already has a magnetic rug on when she comes in from the field for a few hours before I ride in the evenings and I do have a pair of magnetic o/r boots so think I'll put those on from now on.

Agree about the wraps, bloody awful things for heating up the legs, never use them!

It's really good to hear your boy's leg is stronger than ever. She's an eventer, only 7 yrs old so would love to think we can go back to what we love doing rather than sticking to dressage! ;-)

Thanks everyone for your replies :-)

I am sure she will get back to jumping - mine was a hurldler damaged it badly and needed 12 months off. He also degloved the leg as the owners bandaged the tendon far too tight and the flesh died. It has never come back with the integrity of normal skin so that can cause me problems with boots, but I have had him XC, Sj as well as dressage and never a days lameness. the vet reckons the tendon is almost better than new.

I have bio-flow magnetic boots and from what I can remember the instructions said front legs only and don't use for more than 8 hrs. I do use them on the back legs tho if needed but I'd put them on in the morning and take off in the afternoon.

I have bioflow magnetic tendon wraps which are more suitable to use in the stable. They are made from a mesh type material which is designed to allow the air to still flow around the legs. Idea for this time of year as you can put them on wet legs and they allow them to dry off. I use them to reduce puffyness in his hind legs from being stabled overnight and they do seem to help.

My mare tore her DDFT last year and I used the Premiere Equine magnetic boots. I swear they helped her recovery. I didnt use them a lot and not for long periods. We started at 20 mins and never went over 1hr. Vets told me the tendon would have to be very heated as in heavy work to do any real damage. Incidentally, my horse is now sound.

Just did a search and this thread came up as I have a similar problem, my 33 year old has damaged his tendon and my vet has said some magnet boots might help

Which ones ? I've looked at the premier equine ones and they look very bulky, has anyone used the NEW brand ones or any others they think work that could be left on during the day, as he has gel on over night so I thought the boots could go on during the day.

Also have another problem, he is 33 but thinks he is 3, vet wants me to walk him VERY slowly for a mooch around yard nibling grass twice a day on hard surface, PROBLEM ! my horse is brilliant when on box rest IN the stable, once they say I can walk him thats where I have trouble, he's been really good but hasn't been on any pain killers as vet said if he can feel pain he might not be so silly, but he came to check him yesterday and said he should have some danilon to calm it down as it is still a bit swollen (injury done in field 28 April) Originally treated for foot infection, long story .................

Anyone know of a calmer I could give him that won't interfere with other stuff he's getting

He has formula for feet
Equimins joint supplememt

Think thats it, thanks for reading

I've also had to deal with SFDT injuries in the past, and use the Bioflow tendon wraps overnight in the stable. I think they must be breathable as they're made from a mesh type material. They're quite expensive, so I'm sure the manufacturers would have done plenty of research into it before assuring users that they're safe to use overnight. To be safe, I still make sure I put them on as late as possible in the evening, and take them off first thing in the morning.

I've also found the Aerborn Cool Sport boots excellent - to be used after exercise:

They're so much more convenient to use than standing there and cold hosing for what seems to take ages! Also, because they act like a cold compress on the lower leg, they always reduce the chronic 'puffiness' that my TB have around his tendons and fetlocks (even if it's temporarily).
