I am competeing my thoroughbred nearly everyweek now and I am becoming a bit concerned about his legs.
He has started coming in from the feild with bumps and grazes on his legs (Probally due to he's started sharing it with his bossy warmblood friend) and the other day he came in with a swollen hock.
Now I think the hock might have been from jumping the day before, but even if he did do it in the feild.. I still feel like I should look after his legs more due to the exra stress they are being put under when jumping everyweek.
Im looking to either use cool/ice boots on him after competing or magnet therapy moots after competing. I know the magnets can be used to warm up leg muscels as well as cool them down, but the cool boots can only be used to cool down the legs.
Also, cooling/ice therapy does reduce swelling of any muscles/tissues and is good for the tendons but cant it make the horses legs stiff due to the coldness? Which is what puts me off them. Also, would you use the cool/ice boots after all excersize or just strenuous excersize such as competing or a good workout? I have heared that you may atually use cool boots more regually e.g. after a comp, but the ICE boots after say a stay away show etc.
With the magnetic boots, does it reduce swelling as much as the cool/ice boots, because wearing boots/legwraps would make their tendons warmer? And another thing is DO THEY ACTUALLY WORK?(The whole magnet therapy thing?)
What brands do you recomend for the magnetic boots? (Cool boots are cool boots but the magnets might have different strengths/more or less magnets in the product etc.?)
I was thinking the preimer equine BI-POLAR boot wraps? Has anyone used these before?http://www.premierequine.co.uk/acatalog/Bi-Polar-Magnet-Boot-Technology.html And because the do a Bi-polar hock boot (for his swollen hock)
Also whats the difference between BIOFLOW and BI-POLAR?
Could you use water/cool/ice boots with the magnet boots? E.g. cool boots to cool down the legs after excersize and then the magnet boots land hour later or in the stable etc.? The only thing that concerns me with this is the cooling down, heaing up, cooling down, heating up of the horses tendons as I heared this can weaken them?
Sorry for the massive post, with loads of questions!
All advice/opinions appreciated!
