Yep the sentence starting "Conventional aerodynamics seemed to suggest..." gives the impression that scientists were bamboozled when infact one can't do the calculation without making some assumptions that one knows might be false (hence the source of error). It took a bit to work out the mechanism though!
The 'myth' element is explained here and in this Wikipedia article under 'flight'. 'hoax' was not the right word, I meant 'myth'
I was considering using bioflow wraps on my youngster as I think hes forming a splint on his hind leg. Do splints actually make them lame or is it just recommended that you give them time off? How long before its too late?! The bioflow wraps are called tendon wraps, do they work on the whole leg or literally just the tendon? Also do they aid wingles?
How about the paper I've referred you to then puddi?
LOL I've just read - it didn't take long, I should have spotted from the ref you gave me that it was only 2 pages including a large heading, abstract and references - as I suspected it's a conference proceedings paper "Proceedings of the 5th International Symposium Workshop on Circadian Rhythms and Clinical Chronotherapy". Goodness only knows what is the connection with circadian rhythms.
It's worthless as a study and devoid of any notion of rigor. Even in the abstract it uses the word 'suggest' rather than 'show' to describe the outcome - as usual this is because they didn't show anything. So it certainly does not come even vaguely close to showing magnetism affects blood flow. (Happy to PM anyone the detail)
I hope that I am not the only one to have enjoyed this thread.
Surely anyone who has considered using any particular treatment would be interested to know all they could about it. too many decisions can be based on simply what we want to believe, or the spin of a salesman that can all too often drown out cautious scepticism. It does no harm to listen, then at the end of the day we can make are minds up. Sorry its not really my field so I'll be saving my two penneth for later (well most of it anyway)
These are the threads I particularly enjoy on HHO. Informed and reasoned debate.
To my mind there is no 'one upmanship' but an ideal environment for those with open and enquiring minds to gain knowledge or at least stimulate us into questioning rather than blindly following.
Try them, I definitely believe that they work. I went for Bioflow brushing boots so they can be used in stable, field or whilst schooling. Hope this helps, L x
) but just stepping back several points.... Am currently using magnets attached to inside of thermatex wraps on front legs of one of my horses - hind legs thermatex only. Don't know the whys and wherefores, but front legs under wraps definitely warmer than hinds. And also warmer on 1 front leg than other when I have twice accidentally put a hind wrap on 1 front leg by mistake
(i.e. magnet on 1 front and not on other...). Not trying to make any point, but I will continue to use, as am throwing everything possible at my beloved horse to try and sort coffin joint problems. Based on some arguments on here, why do I bother ??- because if there is the very slimmest chance of it helping - I would rather try than think 'if only' later. Incidentally these are magnets nicked off an armadillo rug, which helped my old boy with his arthritis for 2 winters - if he missed a day of wearing his rug (couple of hours at a time) he was noticably stiffer the next day .
I think they work. I use them on my horses sometimes. Mine are the brushing boot type.
Be VERY careful about using them near cuts though!! It DID say in the instructions not to, but I thought my horses injury had healed up sufficently to use them again. BIG MISTAKE, just overnight with them on caused the injury to open up again!! So they definately do something!
As for the magnetic boots...hmm...each to their own. Oh and by the by...so if they so say improve circulation, should the magnets be positioned in a way so the magnetic forces can direct the red blood cells (which contain the iron) in the right direction...and not just whacked on the side of the leg in any old fashion?!?!
I use a magnetic rug on my old mare who has artheritis and it def does make a difference! They do work on drawing the blood flow to the affected area which is why you shouldnt put them on cuts etc they just generally improve blood circulation.
how old were these splints out of curiosity...and have you been using any other treatment on the splints such as splintex?!? Also...have there been any changes to routine such as walking your horse out more?!?
