My older lad has an 'irregular muscle spasm' in one back hind, similar symptom wise to stringhalt, but not as severe with no pain. With this cold weather it's affecting him, making his movement rather exaggerated. I have also noticed a bit of a change in his hocks, a small swelling and heat before he has exercised, much improved after. I am thinking that it is to do with the damp/cold. This has not affected him at all in ridden work, he's not lame, and is still a total knobber and takes flight at any given opportunity!

Bit of history- Dressage horse primarily, but has SJ & evented with previous owners. I have owned him for a couple of years now, he is mainly my nanny horse out on hacks for the youngsters, but we do some decent schooling when we get chance and he was doing some local shows, xc & jumping over the summer. He's in light work currently, depending om how he is I'd love to hunt him this winter, blow the wind out of his overzealous sails.

Obviously I am going to rug him to keep his quarters warm, but was considering trying magnet therapy, mainly the hock boots?

I am also putting him back on a joint supp, he was on suppleaze gold, but was wondering what people recommend? He is part bred shire, so being 14, this sort of thing is bound to crop up, and is not really serious enough for veterinary attention as of yet. However, if it were to worsen, I would really like some info on injections too.

You can have my cold and my OHs sickness bug if you really want! Failing that some toast as that is all we can both stomach atm!

My sisters horse is fed on Topspec 10:10 which does seem to be good, just starting feeding mine this too along with Topspec feed balancer which has lots of good stuff in it as my horse is (hopefully) on the road to recovery following suspensory ligament damage - I'm trying anything that might help. Think any supplements with Glucosamine and MSM in are good - this is what they all seem to have in them at least!

I have ordered a magetic rug for mine (injury has caused other back problems) and he wears his magnetic boots for an hour a day atm to help blood supply around the ligament. No results on those as yet, but have never heard anything bad about magnets, and at the very least they won't afaik do any harm :) So will watch others answers for that

Thanks stenciface, I have just started him on a NAF veteran supp that was hanging around in the feed shed, but was thinking something more joint specific would be best.

I have read that Glucosamine isn't proven to work on horses, and am a bit dubious about feeding him shellfish based things too (not that he knows any different lol). So will have to look into that!

I use thes on my horse's back legs for her arthritis, and have found them invaluable. They increase the blood flow and this warms up the joint so she is a hell of a lot less stiff. I wouldn't be without them.
I also used NAF superflex and cod liver oil which again really helped with her movement to the extent that we were still jumping up until 4 months ago. However shes out of work now due to another leg problem :p (what are they like).
These boots are really good for the fprice and VERY versatile and have helped speed up the recovery of knocks and scrapes all over her legs. They are also good for removing swelling in the joints on a morning :)

My girl has had previous suspensory issues and most recently collateral ligament problems. I have the bio-flow magnetic boots/wraps not sure if they do a hock boot though. Since her suspensory I was using newmarket joint supplement with glucosamine but have just ordered some Litovet joint supplement with rosehip on the recommendation of a friend as I too had seen various articles questioning how good glucosamine actually was for horses.

Hope this helps, good luck :)

PE magnetic boots are great, really helped my 24 yr ex racer. Im now using suppleeaze gold as it was the highest purest supplement I could find. I found a lot of ''hight st'' supplements had so many fillers and such little joint protection in them.

I am now going to start boots too as its getting colder. They cant make the situation an worse.

Thanks guys, this is all really helpful! I think I will be investing in some boots/wraps as I have been reading good things, and as said, they can't do any harm!

I will look into litovet, thanks pollana!

My horse had tildren last year and touch wood has been fine so far. Been getting a bit nervous coming up to winter and have put him on premierflex and got some magnetic hock boots from Derby house. Hoping they keep him feeling good.

Really? I didn't know that - The Topspec stuff is all vegetarian - so no worries about feeding your horse shellfish - something I am pretty careful about tbh! :)

Will have to reed up on the rosehips, maybe I can just pick and dry some myself?
