As some of you may know, my mare has been behaving cold backed. I have now discovered that this is due to very tight/tense muscles behind her saddle area. Saddle fits, I think it was her old one that did the damage. She has since had all checks done. I was thinking of going along the lines of magnetic therapy to help ease the muscle tightness to enable her to start working properly.
Now on ebay I have found a Thermalux rug that is an exercise sheet with magnets in it and it claims to be able to loosen off tense muscles, amongst other things.
What are your views/experiences of this? Should I take the plunge and buy it or is it a waste of money?

I have an equilibrium back pad which I am still trying to decide on - seems to have more of a benefit in winter when he is boxed over night - muscles are softer and he is less stressy over me grooming his back. Their massage pad is ace though - bit pricey but more of an instant effect than the magentic version.

Thank you for your reply.
I have looked at the massage pad and at the moment it is just way out of my price range. This exercise sheet would be perfect until I save up for the pad.
I just wanted to make sure I won't be wasting my money!

I know the massage is pricey - I only have 1/3rd share in mine

Thankfully we all like to use it at different times. Is there no one who might be interested in going in on one at your yard??

My mare is 17 and hates getting cold - gets VERY tense.

Dad made her a giant sized wheatie bag, which gets heated up in the microwave, and she wears it under her rug then under her 1/4 sheet while I tack up, then I take it out and get on - lovely warm back muscles!!

I've used a magnetic rug for years and it's brilliant - you can definintely notice when the horse has not been wearing one.

They work on the (madly simplified) principle of aligning the ions within the red blood cells correctly - which means that the blood circulation is greatly improved - obviously this will lead to better muscle function, among other things.

I put it on for a short time initially to get the horse's system used to it - otherwise it can make them very groggy - then they can wear them for up to 23 hours a day, once they're used to them.

Not sure about exercise sheets with magnets in - mine is a summer sheet which can go under stable rugs in the winter. I know that you're not meant to ride in magnetic brushing boots (not more than light hacking anyway)....... wouldn't it be too warm to ride in now?

Magnets are great for bringing down swollen joints too (again increasing blood supply) but shouldn't be used on open wounds (obvious really!)

CrazyMare - fab idea - same concept - bringing blood to the area and loosening it up

I use the equilibrium massage pad as my horse is slightly cold backed. since I have bought it, he is so much better, can get straight on and he is much looser and more relaxed. Yes - they are a lot of money, but in my opinion if it makes my horse more comfortable and it is a small expense to pay out.
