MAGPIES!!!! Methods of control????

If you set a larson trap it is a legal requirement that you check the bird once a day and feed and water it (although i'm assuming that will be an easy job for you)

Quote..."lace some minced beef with warfarin and chuck it up onto the roof of your stables...."that should sort it...and get rid of a few damned crows too!!"

If you use this method they die in the wild and become carrion for other species, so not only do you kill the magpies you would also probably polish off Red Kites, Buzzards, Owls and other species who pick at the carcass. Use a Magpie trap please.

Another vote for the Larsen trap!
My hubby shoots any when he is pigeon and rook shooting on our neighbouring farmer's fields but as an ex-gamekeeper, he recommends the larsen trap.
Good luck!

ps - I don't like the use of poison either as have found one or two kestrels dying after they have eaten the poisoned mice around our stable.

We use a larson trap - and have found one of the best ways to get the first bird down in is putting some duck or chicken eggs in - Although the duck eggs is the main reason we have problems with magpies here - they love stealing them to eat! So I don't know whether that would work for all magpies as I expect ones local to us are aware of the duck egg delicacy!!

larsen trap for sure, my OH has just popped down to check on the one we have set up right now lol, it's been out all week and we've got 12 maggies and 7 crows so far, oh and a squirrel

we have a problem with the crows more than the maggies getting in the hen house and nicking all the eggs.

got to chuckle tho cos the old chap who caught the bait magpie reckons he's had the same one for 3 years, even tho he releases it every season

we just smiled and said how amazing lol

If you shoot one and leave it laying on the ground.... the others will come and mob it.... making a horrid rattttatttatttt sort of noise that will attract more and more of them...... then just pick them off as they come in to land!!!

Magpies are mostly carrion so if there is no easy food you won't get the problem! You can buy wheelie bins for about £25.00 from Costco and Makro.

You also have to be very experienced to use a Larsen trap, a neighbour of ours ended up in court and was fined over £1k by the judge for improper use, the RSPCA got involved as they said the bait bird did not have enough food/water.

Please remember you need a licence to shoot magpies even though they are vermin.

If there is someone in your area who is a good shot, has a licence (both for vermin and shotgun/firearms) ask them to come and deal with your problem.

Please don't use poison in meat, remember all of the birds that will also eat this!
