So i went to the stables tonight to find my Gypsy Vanner yearling with a strange looking knot/plait in his mane.

I can remember seeing it when i bought him in this morning, but he was very wet and he is a very itchy horse so could be just a tangle.

However, there is the paranoia in me that thinks hes been targeted. He is a very handsome looking horse and is very well bred. However i cant remember seeing it this morning and i would'av noticed it an touselled it out with my fingers if i had seen it as it was massive.

I'm going up the stables throughout the night as feel anxious. Hes my baby :(

Is it true about the horse thefts or myth?

I've seen a fair few threads relating to this topic on here before...If you google HHO and wind plaits I'm sure a fair few would come up for you to have a browse through.

Personally, I think it's probably just caused by the wind/rolling/hedges etc :)

Myth. I keep my horse at a stud and the mares came back from their winter grazing a few weeks ago and 4 out of 7 had wind plaits, the other 3 have manes to short to 'hold' a tangle.

I thought there could be SOME truth in them, until one of the horses at the yard got one and seeing it in real life, I could easily tell it was just wind or similar.

Has anyone, anywhere, ever seen any real evidence (not rumour or a friend of a friend) that there's a link between plaits and thefts?

It seems extremely unlikely IMO that anyone stealing your horse would come and warn you first.

Sorry, I must have misread your OP, because I got the impression he was out and came in with the tangles.

As carefreegirl has mentioned, he is going to be naturally more prone to tangles and a lot of us wouldn't experience them because a lot of horses have shorter manes nowadays that dont tangle as much/at all.

I still maintain its a myth, but if it puts your mind at ease, keep an eye. :)

Myth. I've got very long hair that frequently d

LOL at this! Please check-in tomorrow so we know you havent been snatched in the night!
Seriously though, theres no real evidence that plaiting leads to theft, I wouldnt worry. I know, I havent copied all of Littlelegs post, stupid laptop!

You never know littlelegs better sleep with the light on just in case.
OP I don't understand why they would plait thieves aren't thick if someone esle was spotting the horses there are loads of ways to indentify them without leaving something that might alert the owners.
I was told they do it to see if they are combed out so they can see if the horses are being checked TBH I am sceptical.

Myth, plaits and thefts have never been linked, that comes straight from Avon and Somerset constabulary.
