Major Milestone

Well a major milestone was reached to day, I (yes Me) got on Bodey for the first time!! I was a little nervous but as my instructor said, he is my horse, so I had to bite the bullet and do it! We are taking things very slowly with him as he is still a bit nervy however he is 100 times better then he was even a couple of weeks ago.

Videos of leaning over:

And me on, yeah!

This was a really big day today for me and Bodey. All advice and constructive criticism welcome.

It sure was, I’m still on a high! I was pooing my pants though (excuse the phase) as I have never actually backed a horse before (done the holding bit but not the getting on bit)!
I just can’t stop grinning, and so all the hard work begins!

Oh thanks, I was a bit worried that people would think, oh big deal, if you know what I mean. But it’s a major deal to me!!!!!!!

Yes I think Bodey is a good 15hh (I’m about 5ft7), and is bum high (he is 3.5 years old), so should grow another inch I should imagine? What do you think?

Oh well done jo! Thats really good and a very big day for you and your lovely boy.

The horses ive backed have been ok other than a few bucks when learning to accept the leg.

I bet you have him going out of little hacks in the next few weeks. Im a great fan of hacking youngsters on short rides gets them out to see lots without asking too much from then physically.

I love the vids and piccies

Oh thank you! I hope so I really do as I love my hacking and I’m sure Bodey will too. As I said we are taking it slow just because he is a slightly nervy personality and I’m worried I will do something to ruin him.

Don't be in any rush. Nothing gained from it. Do you take him out inhand for hacks if not good way to break things up and get him used to it? I would spend plenty of time moutning and dismounting and getting really confident like mounting any other horse. Then begin transitions and get really confident in walking forwards and haulting *were pre-lunging comes in handy with voice* Then stirring and trot transitions etc leaving canter for a while yet. When your really confident venturing out with plenty of people of foot to give him confidences *Rather then horses becuase they spoke he will plus he will become harder to go alone later*. Just take is slowly horses aren't broken in weeks. I hate seeing horses mounted, walk, troted, cantered and jump!! and DA DA broken horse in just a session.... Horses brians work in away they can only truely learn a few things so keep it really simple.

If you don't ask to much he won't say no!

Couldn’t agree more. And that’s exactly how my instructor works!

Nothing will be (or can be) rushed with Bodey, and with him being so young we have all the time in the world!

Big thanks for your advice!

I know I love his markings too! And the black tail is one of the things that attracted me to him as most of the cobs seemed to have a white tail (Blacks does).

He, He, he was a bit like ‘get on with it mother and then I get my treat!’.

Thanks!
