Had a bit of a traumatic experience today when the dog's lead's clip broke and he got loose onto the dual carriageway (was waiting at the entrace to a lane off the DC for my lift). Won't go into details but luckily the cars missed him and a lovely man managed to stop and help me catch him. He had his flourescent coat on and I think that also helped too. Anyway so firstly, always check your leads and don't use one if it's clip or material looks dodgy!

Also, is there a harness that exists which has a lead attached to it without a clip? Seeing as i'm now rather paranoid about clips breaking on me as I never want it to happen again! Or any other suggestions that people might have.

Going to hug the dog now, I think he's as shaken as I am :(

Thank god he was caught before injury occurred.

My dog managed to slip his halti one day next to a busy road and raced off - luckily he did come back when called (has no recall).

Unable to advise of a harness etc, but hope you find one for your piece of mind x
 
This happened to me once. I was crossing a busy road and for some reason he lunged and the clip snapped. He ran across the road and started running down the pavement. I started - stupidly - chasing him. I stopped and ran in the opposite direction and when he came back i grabbed him by a big handful of skin and he started shrieking and people were looking and I didn't care, I carried him for 10 minutes in the rain and got to my front door in tears. My mum answered and burst out laughing. :mad:
 
wooh how lucky and very relieving that no harm was done, how scarey tho

can't advise re harness etc but I think I'll be learning lessons from your experience, when out and about I use a harness with front and back D rings so my dog is secured on 2 points anyways, but if I was to just use a collar, instead of my training lead being clipped to itself I'll be attaching the 2 clips to the collar .. I think I'll also work some more on my girls recall, its pretty good but best to be on the safe side
 
What kind of clip was it? I've had plastic slot-in clips on collars break on me before and I don't like using them, metal buckles or flat link choke chains for me - with a flat link, even if you don't have it on the live ring, you can clip it on to other links to make it tighter.

Would never buy collars and leads out of pound shops/supermarkets etc, they're generally cheap rubbish.

What type dog? Cheap leads just aren't worth it. I buy puns shop hi viz collars but never clip into them unless biking with the dogs (as they do break under strain). If your really worried how about a lead rope.

Brass snaps are supposed to be the best and stainless steel should always be cast, not welded. Look for products designed for working or hard pulling dogs - Sprenger, Manmat etc.

I'm afraid it's not just clips you need to be careful about, I've had a nylon long line snap - I screamed "DOWN!" with such ferocity that the dog flattened himself on the floor and damn near wet himself. :o
 
Another vote for Sprenger! I've had two lunge lines snap that I was using as long lines but in fairness they had endured quite a lot of abuse.

This also justifies my ridiculous lead collection, I use so many different ones to avoid wear and tear :p
 
I use slip lead for both my own and all boarding dogs (their leads are removed) I will not take a chance after one dog wriggled out of a harness (I was like lightening) and grabbed it (very nervous dog too) and another the collar was lose and the dog back up and the collar came off (again) I grabbed the dog and then as already said an akitas nylon collar came apart at the plastic fastener( I hate this type of collar)!!!
Have seen haltis slip off too.........you cant get anymore safe than a half check (no fastener) leather or nylon all the way round and a good quality training lead (I use the nylon halti leads) if im training a dog, otherwise slip leads all the way (no chance of getting out of one)
 
I make some all in one half check collars and leads for a friend who doesn't trust trigger hooks. She walks 4 greyhounds together and is v pleased with them
 
It was actually a horse leadrope made out of lungeline fabric, was a good length and had a padded handle. The clip was big and metal and it was one of those you like press the bit back towards the side to open it, not a trigger clip type one like leadropes have. Will have a look at the Sprenger ones etc :)

Btw he's a little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel so not big or strong but he got spooked by something and next thing I know he's in the middle of the road :( Am a bit calmer now, i was just in shock this morning. Pony cuddles, puppy hugs and a coffee with my friend soon sorted that out :)

He was wearing a harness over his coat and it was clipped to the D ring of his harness. Am off to do some lead shopping now :rolleyes::D
 
strong stuff collars and leads are supposedly amazing. Obviously a collar would be a bit much for your CKC, but the leads may be worth a look.

they are hand made in Britain, and i know many bulldoggers who swear by them- i have been tempted for a while, but i am resisting the urge to buy when i dont need... just...
