We are currently looking into various options of bringing in our own bedding etc, we have very limited access to different types so looking for some recommendations of the different 'makes' of shavings.

What do you all use and what do you think? (not interested in wood pellets, auboise etc).

Thanks!

I've tried pretty much every brand/type of shavings and my preference is Bedmax, with Snowflake coming second!

See, I find that other types of shavings got dirtier faster than Bedmax does....both mine mix their beds a lot and the finer shavings mix more.

You do need a decent depth with it though, but I like them to have a good deep bit at the back (rubber matted stables so I do a 3rd of the floor bedded down)

Have a youngster who was on straw when we bought her so we put her on that for a while. We had to swap though as I can't muck out a straw bed to save my life so we put her on Bedmax which looked great for a few days but then went very dirty.
We always keep a deep bed and I have to admit it didn't move as much as the straw did but I couldn't stand to look at it so she is now on Snowflake & it looks much better.

I guess we all speak as we find.

I tried it with less bedding in and it did look really grubby....but I guess different types suit different horses!

Actually I'm waiting for someone to invent a Snowflake/Bedmax 50/50 mix because THAT is my ideal! But I can never be arsed to buy the 2 diff types and mix myself (when I do it's def the best option)

Bedmax doesn't go very far! Snowflake is rather too fine for my liking! An inbetween is better - and in fact I have mixed the two at times. Currently I use Natural Pine which is not as large flaked as Bedmax and seems to work well.

Just changed from Bedmax. They seemed to go grubby very quickly

Echo this. Was really impressed at how big and fluffy the beds were the first time I used Bedmax but they were filthy within a couple of days. Have only used the large flake Bedmax but I think you can get a smaller flake now. Not sure if that's any better. :)

Hunters by a mile :D Massive bales and always dust free and of a really consistent quality - little bit pricer than other brands but I get by with one of these on my 16.3hh beds evry fortnight.

I'm also just about to change onto shavings from straw (hopefully next weekend) and I'm thinking of moving onto Lay-Soft, which was the bedding supplied at the Trailblazers Champs this summer, so I only actually tested it for a couple of days but I really liked it - does anyone have any thoughts on Lay-Soft?

I too like the look of Bedmax, but find them not as absorbant as some others. One mare is very clean and wees in one place generally, I only take the wet out once a week, and I make sure the wee-area has Hunter shavings at the bottom to absorb the wet. BUT I have tried the Littlemax and much prefer that to the Bedmax. I reckon on using a couple of Bed/Littlemax, to every one of Hunter - a bit of a faf, but she's worth it! I should also put my husband prefers the look of Bedmax, this mare is his, and he pays the bills so this is how I manage it - our other horse is on Hemcore, not sure any shavings would be my choice of bedding!

Echo 100% they are fab, much fluffier than other shavings too when out the bag. I only use one every 10 days or so and always used at least 2 of other makes
