For the third time walkers have let my horses out! This time, not only did they leave the gate open to the field, they also left the gate open to the yard resulting in my horses getting out on to the lane :(

Needless to say I'm absolutely seething...

I have attached a spring fasten to the walkers gate (3 foot gate so they don't have to open the horses 12 foot gate) so in theory it should auto close now, but I cannot do this to the main gate should they decide to open this, or to the yard gate.

If they manage to let them out again I'm taking the gate out, which is only there for their convenience, and putting a bloody styal in!

Does anyone else have any ideas?

Can you lock the main gate?A cheap bike lock should be enough. The other thing you could do is put a post in that prevents the smaller gate opening fully, thus not encouraging horses to push through it.

Put the style in.... We have same problems on our yard, 3 gates and yard gate with public path through it... Some even moan at the dogs on the yard who live there!!!! Luckily the main gate swings shut on its own as one of the posts is leaning inward, so it doesn't get left open, but turnout ones have been left open causing horses to get in wrong place.

I can't lock the main gate as it would restrict access to the footpath iyswim :(

The idea of putting a post in to stop it full opening is a good one - as there are 3 gates joined at a 90 degree angle I'm not sure if it would stop me opening the main gates. I am however going to go out and see whether it could be done...

It baffles me that walkers, even with no horse experience would leave gates open ?! Surely that's hill walking 101 - close all gates behind you !! I think if it's not an option to have a kissing gate or similar then a large sign might be the way to go.

Unfortunately the post idea won't work :( the gate opens put of the field and it will cause a problem with turnout on the other two field gates :(

There is now a sign saying 'Dear walkers. This gate is here for your convenience. If one more person leaves it open I will replace it with a style'

What a nuisance! When we were at livery the YO fenced horse walkways round the fields, for the convenience of his customers, every bleddy dog walker in the area took this mean they could wander at will, feeding loaves of bread and god knows what else to the horses!
