Has anyone managed to make fly gel? I make my own fly spray with good results every year and was thinking of i mix it with aqueous cream it would work like fly gel?
Do you mean for application on places like face and udders/sheath? I just use neem oil, mixed with benzyl benzoate, but neem oil alone is just as good and also antiseptic. As I mix it with BB, I don't worry about it solidifying, but you could use an empty sudecrem container or similar and pour molten neem oil in, then apply with a sponge if it solidifies.
I've thought about making a gel using aloe vera gel as a base. It's non sticky, good for the skin and you could add whatever essential oils you want. I used to buy a Natural Equine product that was aloe vera, cedarwood, lemon oil, eucalyptus tea tree and it worked a treat, sadly they no longer make it due to the new regulations. You could also try adding bog myrtle if you can find it.
I bought the Lincoln fly repellent gel for my first pony as he was terrified of spray bottles. It was blumming useless! Luckily second horsey couldn't care less about spray bottles
I use Vaseline with some citronella oil mixed in. Vaseline alone would probably do the trick as the flies can't grip on it, but it smells nicer with citronella oil in it
Eta, I only use this on udders, would be a bit of a greasy mess on faces!
