Sorry in advance if someone has already posted this on the forum!

Something very dear to my heart is being able to ride on the roads as safely as possible - which can be rather challenging with drivers passing too close, or too fast (or both).

With this in mind please could you all read/sign this petition if you haven't already done so. We're well over the 10K mark but I'd love to get 100K (BIG ask I know!!). This petition is to try and make what is currently a guideline actual law.

Thank you.

Mine was the 12,105th signature.

I share Cauda Equina's doubt on the enforceability of any new law.

As I see it, failure to respect Highway Code Rules 163 and 215 are tantamount to the offense of "Driving without due care and attention"; a conviction gets between 3 and 9 points and I think a fine of up to £2500...

I would much prefer to see the existing laws enforced more frequently, but other than video coverage of all the roads and country lanes and using artificial intelligence to spot infractions, I don't see what can really be done.

I'm involved with the group, the pass wide and slow group and they work tirelessly to try to imporve safety on our roads and you are right about what you are saying, it's NOT enforceable as are many other new laws that are introduced, in reality we all know this. I feel if this became law and in the event of an accident and there will be loads more as the driving standards in this country are getting worse, then if proved via head cam, dashcam evidence, independent witnesses etc that the driver was at fault they could face stricter penalties if they were not passing the horse as they should be by this law that we are campaigning for.
I agree prevention is better than cure but until all roads have 24 hour cctv it's just not going to happen, this is the best that can be achieved in the meantime.
So please, everybody, sign it , it's a start

Thank you everyone , pass wide and slow started this to get a debate , I'm sure what we all agree on if we can get this subject to the houses of parliament we can then get it debated . They will then debate what can if what cannot be done for change. No it might not bring a new law but it will bring it to a important debate , thank you , please keep signing and sharing and thank you.to you for sharing originally

We are running out of time on this petition. Don't worry about how or why if you think it's a good way to keep us safe, let parliament work it out but if you just don't sign nothing will change

I don't usually sign petitions like this, as often they ask for the world and have bad grammar.

On this occasion, I have. There is already protection in law, but it is under drive without due care and attention and many drivers have no idea what care is needed for horses. So, an arbitrary 15mph and a car's width would not be perfect in every circumstance (such as the tractors wit haymaking equipment on the back going round at the moment) but, for drivers who don't know horses, it is a start.

Done. We moved because of unsafe roads (among other things). My mums horse was even hit be a speeding driver which resulted in him being put down. If I remember correctly he got no repercussions for it and she had to pay for the damage on his car.
