I am just replanning my fields a little bit. I am thinking of using part of my winter field for a round pen or small working area that I can lunge my horse and my children could do some work with the shetland. As this turns mainly to mud during the winter and is not really good for grazing I thought I could put sand down so this area can be used in winter and summer for exercising. It can still be used for turnout when needed during the winter. It would also be situated just by my hardstanding area and shelter.

I think this would work well, but any ideas on how to do this or reasons not to let me know!! Thanks

I put up a round pen a few years ago. It is by no means the de luxe version but it does the job. Vets and farriers love it as it makes handling a lot easier.

I got some odd sized posts (5 foot?) from my local timber yard so they were a bit cheaper (Always worth asking about such things!) and got my fencing contractor to bash them in. I've white tape and 150mm x 12mm boards screwed onto the posts at and below horse eye level. Buy a board and arrange the posts so you use the whole length of the board for economy. About 60ft diameter seems the recommended size. We also have a turning post in the centre and a few other refinements built in. Do a search on here for round pen as there have been some good ideas.
