How do you know when you`ve done enough? Where do you draw the line emotionally, physically and financially?

If you haven`t got insurance, if you know vets bill could soon run into the thousands with no cure as such, and if nothing worked last winter to help relieve the problems/issues, but the horse is only young and you can`t change any of the day to day care to improve the situation as they already get the best possible in everyway.

How do you make these decisions ? :(

The day the 'spark' goes from my mare's eyes, is the day I will put to sleep. Other than the obvious emergency euthanasia.

I always try to make the decision based on the horse's quality of life. If it's not good enough, it's time to say goodbye, no matter the age of the horse. I've had to make the decision for a 4 wk foal, a 6 yr old and 2 x 11 yr olds as well the oldies, it's awful but better than the alternative.

Answer is.. you know your horse and you will know when the time is right.. agree with the above posts.. it may be that they lose that spark in themselves or it really is out of your hands as their quality of life is suffering.

Always the hardest decision ever though.. :(

I guess the simple answer if you are not prepared to finance any more treatment, and lack of it determines quality of life - you put down. Regardless of the age.
