Taking a cob into a show at easter,
he is a bright bay with 4 massive stockings whcih should be bright white, but currently are halfway between white and bay! hehe (stupid dirt)

So I am gonna give him a bath the night before the show, however, does anyone have any tips for shampoo or overnight stuff to make them super beautiful white? also anything I can do on the day for keeping them white? as the outdoor warm up arena is quite deep........

thanks!

Chalk the legs before washing them, wash them and almost paint the chalk on whilst they are wet, then really massage the chalk in once they are dry. Thats what I do

. Once I have started warming up I don't bother re-whitening them, I have other things to think about and he judge realises you have just had to warm up in a bog

Ahh my teacher said about quicksilver shampoo (thanks, rara I am going to buy a big block the weekend before, i love chalk!)

Where do you get quiksilver shampoo from can I ask? internet or most retailers?

Use hot water (as hot as horse and you can bear), into that I put a squirt of fairy liquid and a good splash of purple wound spray, mix well and use to scrub with a hardish brush. I then bandage with fleece bandages in an attempt to keep them clean through the night!

I have a white mare!!
Quicksilver shampoo, with hot water, once mixed with the water once straight on. Rinse!
Then i make a paste of powdered chalk and water. With an old brush i paint this on, then i usually plait while it dries then i bandage over night. At the event i take bandages off and brush off any excess chalk. You are lucky its just the socks, i have to go up to her elbows and stifles!!!

I usually get it from KM Elite online cos I buy the big bottles. It seems to be only stocked by some retailers, Horsehealth included.

Ditto.

When you put the chalk mix on it looks dull almost putty coloured but when you take the bandages off it's bright white.

If the warm up is boggy, I would warm up in the bandages unless he's likely to get sweaty under them.
I always carry a tub of made up chalk paste and a sponge with me to shows!

ahh neat, thank you, I will check with the yard if he is ok to have the bandages on etc over night, however his white on his back legs goes right up into his groin so hoping he wont lie in too much gank overnight! hehe

Chalk paste close at hand..... gotcha!!!

Great, thanks guys! wohoo, ok we might not get left cante,r but at least we will look pretty on the wrong lead!

with one of those puffer things.
then massage chalk paste into legs, wrap up

next day i will wash them again and use purple stain removing spray by red rum to get rid of any horrid areas still clinging on!

Get a box of zinc oxide powder from your vets. Wash the socks with any horse shampoo (I would personally avoid washing up liquid in case of allergies). Mix a very small amount of water with a good heap of the powder to make a very thick paste. Paint it on the not too wet socks (I towel dry them lightly). I use a hoof oil brush cut down to make short dumpy bristles. Really work the paste in, but leave it laying in the direction in grows. Bandage the legs over night, and I promise that when you take the bandages off, the brightness of his socks will hurt your eyes! (simply brush the excess powder off) You don't have to bandage over night, you can remove any dirty bits the next day with cowboy magic green spot remover. You can also use the zinc oxide on white face markings, obviously avoiding the eye area.

Are your horses hooves white or black? Dark/black hoof polish on dark hooves makes white socks look even brighter.

Good luck at your show.

he has like 2 pale and 2 darker hooves (stupid indecisive horse! hehe) but the chalk paste idea seems to be a popular one so will give that a go as when this horse looks smart he really shows off well! (she says hopefully!)

I wasn't going to use washing up liquid due to risk of reaction and as he is a riding school horse if anything went wrong I am not going to be responsible!

Unfortunatly all 4 of his legs are white with a bay body, and a big white blaze on his face! he is a very handsome cob, just want to make sure i get him looking as good as he can, especially as this will be our first show together and his first EVER! ooo scary
