I'm sure most of you who've seen any of my posts, know I'm on the arty side.

I bought a book (Not arrived yet, should do tomorrow) about making your own 'horse clothes' and I was wondering if you have ever made any of your tack etc?

All I really want to make is a numnah/saddle pad, or maybe something for show/photography, but not practical use. Even with precise instruction, I wouldn't trust myself to make a bridle! Far too essential!

I really wanted a sheepskin numnah but couldn't afford one so used a fleece bought from a craft fair for £20 and stiched it to an old numnah , it was and still is 5 years later gorgeous

Not sewing but I've got an idea for a completely new type of field shelter. I've made countless table top models, tweaked and modified the design, and it's looking good. Now I just need a backer or a companyto take it on!!

I made a saddle pad thing from a quilted bed cover, not very exciting! I know people have made rugs from duvets and bandages from old blankets (back in the 1980s!), and everyone on the yard made a haynet from bailer twine (to the point where the YO/YM used to hide the stuff to stop the fighting over it!

I knew someone who managed to get yards and yards of webbing (very like the stuff headcollars are made from) and was going to try making headcollars from it, but I don't think she could find suitable buckles etc.

Yes, I make all of our display equipment, tack, numnahs, etc., but then I do run a company which makes reproduction historical artefacts. We adapt saddles to make them look more medieval, never made one from scratch.

Oh god that one about the haynets took me right back , I used to do this using the gas cooker to melt the ends so they didn't fray . Stunk the whole place out n my parents hated me , not sure if they have forgiven me 30 years on

I bought a far too small whitaker fleece. Cut the trademark binding away from the front of the fleece, trimmed the fleece so it would sit nicely behind the saddle then stitched the binding back round. I used left over binding to make tabs to secure to the girth straps like a numnah. Home made one of a kind whitaker ride on! I've got a pair of waterproofs made same way out of old waterproof rugs that look quite smart on my matchy matchy spotties!

I know that I've posted this before, but I'm still very proud of my Xmas exercise sheet (I used a 2nd hand plain navy wrap around sheet, hi-viz tape, tinsel and battery powered fairy lights). :)

Like Gala, I have a more practical plan. Mine is an innovative (but simple and very cheap) means of making forage last longer into the night by staggering access...

I made a stable rug last year out of those cheap fleece blankets you can get in primark and an old duvet we had. It was just for a pony but it kept him toastie
