Last time I measured my boy, he was 30 -31 inches at the withers - and he's grown a tad since then - he's over height for breed standard. I'll have to get him to squat down in the ring :D . My bitch is about 26 inches.

When he's standing on his back legs, is a bit taller than me (5'4), so I have to be careful of paw position :D

He's still got to fill out, and looks quite leggy still. He's a big boy :) (and no, I don't feel macho with him - just not in control and a bit scared!)

Their parents aren't that tall, so I don't know what happened with him, and he's bigger than I wanted LOL. Fortunately the pair of them run well together, and seem to be matched.

OH, MEMEMEMEMEMEMEMEME!!!!

We get our new boy on Sunday, he's 6 months old and his owners decided to rehome him as they didn't have the time for him. He actually comes from the breeder we have our name down with for a puppy so in that respect its perfect.

Only got a couple of photos his owner send me, will post more on Sunday/Monday.
Breeder is Malderston in Scotland, its not the breeder who is rehoming, its the people who bought him from them. We were going on the list for pups due this week and found out about this boy, super excited to get him o Sunday.

I've got working mals, and have handled lots over the years.

I love them dearly, but wouldn't recommend them as pet dogs, as they can be very difficult. Stubborn, energetic, very, very sensitive, stubborn, aggressive with a very high adrenaline level, stubborn, destructive, and stubborn. (Cyrus, care to add to this? :D)

They can be single sex aggressive, so if your new dog is another bitch, I would be very careful. Dogs tend to forget arguments very quickly, whereas bitches can hold a grudge for ever!

I researched the breed for 4 years before we went on a puppy list - the breeder we chose (I think she chose us lol) breeds for temperament, as well as working ability, and her pups are very sought after. We were on that list for a further 3 years before a litter arrived. So, in all that time you'd think I'd be ready for them - not a chance!

They entered our lives like little dervishes, and 2 years later, they are still the same. We, on the other paw, are broken, battered, scarred, and our lives have changed completely.

Your girl sounds lovely; single mals can, sometimes, be calmer, but be very careful introducing another to the mix - especially if it comes with 'issues'.

If you are on fb there are lots of good mal sites - pm me if you want a list, or any help etc.

Good post!
Shame most dog owners don't do the research you obviously did.
I really wish people would not choose a breed by what they look like physically, as you have said they
are not a breed for the inexperienced, they are large, incredibly strong animals who need firm handling,
unfortunately as with all breeds they can be owned by anyone.
They can be cared for properly by relatively few and that's partly(largely) the reason so many dogs(of all breeds) end up in rescue!

You are a good advert for responsible dog ownership.

Cheers.

Either you don't know how to measure a dogs height correctly or he is the tallest Malamute(by far) ever to walk this planet.
Lol.

Our boy arrived today and he is fab, few things we need to work on with him, he likes to jump up on people when playing and he needs to learn to walk to heel, but on the whole he is pretty well trained He has a high prey drive so that's anther thing to work on, but he's been fab with the children our old Border Collie has told him to ****** off and he listened after a few telling's lol.

One thing, does anyone else's Mals act like they are starved to death? He is so food obsessed, he devours his food and is looking for more, he will try to take food from you if you let him which we will not. Hes 6 months old, weights around 25kg, hes fed twice a day on JWB kibble and gets frozen minced chicken/tripe/fish added 3 times a week.

I'm so pleased for you! You will have such fun.

Walking to heel - good luck, depending on your lads history, remember they are bred to pull. We made the mistake with ours of listening to someone elses opinion. He said that as we wanted to work them, they should be taught to walk out in front and pull - hmmm two years later and we were still being pulled, but off our feet!!! Dogmatic headcollars could be your friend!

The high prey drive is going to always be there, unfortunately, therefore walking on the lead is a must with these dogs (see my multitude of posts on the on lead debate!).

Food and mals .........always a sore point! They can never have enough. Starving, they are, starving! And because food is classed as a high value 'catch', do watch he doesn't turn aggressive over it, especially where your kids are concerned.

The raw diet seems to suit these dogs very well; see the raw feeding sticky. Be careful feeding kibble and raw together as they digest at different rates and can lead to upsets, and possibly nutritional imbalances. His weight sounds fine for that age.

Um....anything else? Oh yes, keep your sense of humour at all times :D

Thank you, hes only 6 months, hes been to one on one puppy training classes and is fine with basics like sit/down, apparently he has good recall too, but no plans to find out yet lol. We just did a 2 hr walk with him on the lead and other than pulling he was fine, we even met another Mal when we were out and they had fun playing while getting wrapped up in their leads lol.

Food wise, he will be fed in the kitchen behind the stair gate and well away from the cats/other dog/children, hes also going to be in there while we eat.
Will have a good look at the posts in a bit, thanks again x

We were only so long as we met another Mal and spent a good 25 minutes chatting and playing, then we decided to go up a hill we hadn't been up before and it added an extra 20 minutes to out walk home lol.

No probs hon, just didn't want to nag! Glad he gets on with others and can enjoy a good play. Socialisation is so important.

He loves to play, he wasn't really allowed to play with other dogs as he's at the bounce on other dog stage, but he was really good playing on the lead with the other Mally today, going to intro him to my BIL's Mally in a week or so which should be fun lol x

Do you have mals, Wildoat?

Alas no, I have always been interested in them though.
I love the look of them but realise they are not for me, and probably not our other dogs!
We've had Irish wolfhounds and terriers over the years.
Just wish like you, people really did their research before getting any dog!.

Cheers
