OH went for a lesson today and loved it! However has now got very chaffed legs from his jeans and the stirrup leathers pinching. What do other male riders wear? He's not the type of guy to wear jodh

why won't he wear jods?

OH wears mens jods which are looser fitting than womens, and cycling shorts underneath to help keep things in place.;)

the other thing to consider would be riding jeans that don't have an inside seam.

He muttered something about tightness and a squashed gentlemens area when I suggested it, riding jeans sound good, coupled with some half chaps, any ideas where to get the jeans from?

My son has a good pair of leather gaiters he wears over his jeans, he will wear jodpurs as well, but depends when and where he is.

My other son usually wears joddies as he is a bit younger and not as self concious. Also has lots of girl friends that ride horses.

Tight pants are apparently required to avoid sitting on something delicate according to my OH. Went for a ride with him (at a trekking stables) and commented that he wasn't sitting as well as usual and he commented that he was wearing the wrong pants because he couldn't find any tight ones!

Mens jods are pretty baggy really, so should be ok shouldn't they? They also come in mostly olive/browny colours so are quite masculine.. I agree that men would look pretty awful in tighter jods! My stepson and OH ride in men's jods without any problems. The jean ones are ok, but not as male shaped as regular men's jods.

Hubby wears the mark Todd breeches and they don't look like ballet dancers tights!
Coupled up with leather gaiters and boots.
Loose underwear a big no no unless he fancies everything bouncing along with him. Tighter boxers are the way to go!

A couple of men I know admit to wearing women's tights under their jeans.... That might just be the men I know though, and it could get embaressing if he was found out. Lol.
Kx

I should add from a comfort point of view joddies are the most comfortable thing for riding in, both my boys prefer them to ride in, just the oldest gets a bit self concious, (not around women, around other men, although his friends have seen him in joddies once or twice).

"R M Williams Moleskin Jeans". The Aussie stockman's brand of choice. Very soft and comfy for sitting in the saddle all day. Not cheap, probably same as a pair of breeches. Just a guess, I haven't bought mens breeches in the UK recently, or ever. Wintec webbers for the pinching, or keeping the heels down. :)

Agree about the pleated ones and half chaps - jeans have that inner seam which not only can be uncomfortable for some people but will also wear the colour from the skirts of your saddle over time. They're fine on Western and stock saddles but not English, on the whole.

I think it depends on how he sees himself!!! carl hester or john wayne, english riding and sadlles I think you just have to hold your nose and say yes I look like a poof but what the hell im doing dressage and I dont care,!!!:D breaches/jods is what you have to wear to be comfy and for competition.. Western then the saddle is bigger more comfy and you will find jeans that have a flat seam will be fine with or without chaps save your best pair for the show ring, make sure they are long enough to wear over your boots and not ride up when your siting..

My OH wears the Mark Todd breeches with long leather boots and tight pants. Jeans are the worst thing to ride in. He used to feel a bit self conscious but now walks round Tesco with me in his riding gear.

Have asked OH and he says "oh why are men so ridiculous, why can't they just get a grip and wear the proper trousers, it is much more comfortable. Men wear tight trousers to go running and cycling because it is the best most comfortable gear for the job so why try to ride in jeans? The tightness of jodhs is part of the point, if everything is baggy you are likely to sit on something vital."

My son hates wearing jods now and usually wears trckies unless he is competing. He has got some undies from the sportshop that give extra support and he likes wearing those. I might have to look for those stockmans trousers for his general hacking though anybody know where to get them ?

Body Glide Anti Chafe Balm applied to the inner thigh and around the family jewels worn with Mountain Horse boxers - my husband swears by his.

I use Body Glide around my ankles, bra band - anywhere that might get chaffed esp under a body protector. Also excellent for Joggers sore bits :)

I swear by Under Armour as well.

My OH rides daily in stretch jeans and says he has no problems in that respect :). Why won't yours wear denim breeches and obviously 1/2 chaps? Idea for a Christmas present! My OH always swears by Mountain Horse boots as he says they are so comfy. He has been riding far too long to put it on here so I think he knows about about the crown jewels getting squashed :):) Also agree that the right boxers are a must....the sight of constant fiddling at the end of the school is not a pretty one lol!!

I'm a girlie and i only wear breeches to compete in, skinny jeans a grassmeres for me . My OH rides in jeans and half chaps- if i try and even imagine him in jods i get the giggles! But i'm guessing no more ridiculous than his running tights- suppose its what you're used to seeing/ wearing

As a bloke, I find breeches or jodhs a bit to fussy and 'traditional' looking, though I do own a pair or two. I usually just ride in slim fit jeans and tall boots. No problems at all with that. (But yes, supportive underwear is a must!)

I wear breeches, Pikeur, Eurostar or Cavallo. They look fine on guys, no tight bits round your unmentionables!! I wont wear Jodhs as not very flattering. And I wont wear them anywhere except the yard! He could always pull a pair of tracky bottoms on for the to and from the yard bit? I used to do this when I used to get the bus to the yard - after a man in a car once pulled up at the bus stop to offer me a lift & I was wearing jodhs and long boots ( I was about 13!!). And no I didn't get in!! Bloody weirdo!!
