We own a 3 yr old Lurcher. Hes not been castrated and his 'dangly bits' are starting to cause problems as in getting rubbed raw/chapped.
It started last November when we went on holiday and a friend looked after him for a few days. He would have spent more time outside and we put the chapped bits down to possibly being outside in the cold more. We got them right by putting baby powder on them, :) So in June, he stayed at friends farm again and it happenned again but a bit worse :confused:. He does get hot so we thought maybe it was the heat and running around maybe more than he would with us?? Another bout of Sudocrem and Baby powder sorted them out. Alls been well until yesterday when hubby went running with him and hes now got red chapped bits again.
Has this happenned to anyone else?
In hindsight, we should have had him castrated but hes never really been interested in the girls and isnt aggressive or allowed to roam so him keeping his bits hasnt been a problem until now :(. He doesnt seem bothered by it but I now feel mean :(

Would you still not consider getting him castrated now? It would cut out the problem altogether and leave him more comfortable in the long run. He may (or may not) get sick of you touching him if he gets sore. It has also been said that castrated dogs live on average two-three years longer then entire dogs.

To me personally castrating far outweighs keeping them entire. It shouldn't change his personality at all either.

I was talking to hubby about this last night as hubby was sinking further into the sofa with his legs crossed :D
I feel really bad about it and wish now we'd had it done when he was little. He was never a problem so we never had it done.
My brothers rescue dog was done late and he whined all night, poor lad. Our boy is such a soft ar** and I feel terrible now as I know he will be a proper 'poorly soldier' :(:)
Are there any more risks having a well endowed  male dog castrated at a later age. Id never forgive myself :(

Really - he will be fine! With proper painkillers he shouldn't feel a thing and will feel no different. Maybe just a bit more sensitive and grumpy (if he has to wear a lampshade) for a few days afterwards. He will recover before you know it...we have had the wimpiest of dogs getting neutered and they were fine.

Big testicles may cause chapping and rubbing for his entire life. If the skin breaks you also risk getting a nasty infection. I really think that the only long term solution is to whip them off otherwise you may be in for years of rubbing lotions and potions on them.

Because we get in rescue dogs we have had them done at all ages - from 6months old right up to 4-5 years old. Never had a problem with one of them during recovery or afterwards

Thanks for your replies.
We felt really sorry for him last June, they were oozing a bit, not good :(. Just so strange how hes never had a problem up until then and as it hadnt happenned with us we didnt worry too much but seeing them last night we need to sort 'them' out. Oh dear, its looking like the deed is going to have to be done :(
Thanks again :)
