Man dies after being bitten by his own dog?

[ QUOTE ]
yes I have dogs, collies that are above ankle height, I live and work on a farm. The trouble with subjects like this is everyone is talking about their own experiences - If you read what i wrote i said several times that all dogs can bite. I live next door to a tempermental labrador and i have been bitten by several dogs none of which was a rottweiler.
my question was why people have a need to own dogs that are capable of killing and why when it happens so many of you are so quick to jump to the dogs defence ???

[/ QUOTE ]

Maybe because the like other characteristics of the breed?

[ QUOTE ]
oops, didn't mean bulldogs, meant pitbulls ! sorry. I didn't really mean to start all of this I just had to respond when yet again someone leaps to the defence of the dog that attacked somebody maybe without stopping to think that SOME of these dogs just shouldn't be in peoples houses or out in the streets.
Thats just my opinion and i accept that alot of you don't agree with me but thats what makes life and this forum interesting !

[/ QUOTE ] It was my post that you first responded to. I'm pretty sure I was giving a fairly balanced account. I wasn't "leaping to the defense" of anything!!!

Quoting Bonny "my question was why people have a need to own dogs that are capable of killing"

Simply because we all have different tastes!!!

Why are some women attracted to men that look like they could lift up a bus??!!!

I always thought terriers were stupid little pointless yapping things... I have now got 4 as I love their personality.

Same with Rotties, I absolutely love their personality, I have met quite a few now, my first experience was a Rottie x GSD she was lovely. She made me realise that all the bad press was unjustified!!

My Mum is quite easily swayed by public opinion ....and was really nervous of meeting my husbands Rottie for the first time, because of her being a Rottie. The first time she came up to see us after I moved in Jade had done a bunk out walking and returned in the dark as Mum had turned up and she thought it was my GSDx Dobi who was by her side, put her hand down and patted the doggie head by her waist and realised it was rather flat and broad and not Scrappy's!! She admited herself it was the best way for her to be introduced as she hadn't given off nervous vibes!! And although she is nervous of big dogs and always has been she thinks jade is a sweetie!!

[ QUOTE ]
thanks for that, very nice
its got nothing to do with dogs not liking me, dogs biting posties is not a joke, its a real problem and working as one is quite an eye opener......

[/ QUOTE ]

You're welcome.

I know that's it's not a joke- I never said it was. I've been in similer jobs and know what it's like.

I haven't read all the replies (because there are 7 pages worth!) but have skimmed through.
I also find it rather odd that a dog will turn on its pack leader and would be interested to hear the results of the post mortem on how damaging the injuries were that the dog inflicted and whether there were any other contributing factors to the death.

I tried playing dead with our old border collie when he was young - I didn't repeat it. He flew into a frenzy and pawed, licked, barked, nudged fiercely and try to roll over the person on the floor........I don't think it would have taken much for it to have turned more aggressive.
He was a fiercely protective dog but as he grew up his nature became less predictable and more dangerous, despite a good upbringing and him being well trained. He couldn't be left alone with children and was aggressive to strangers when in public (was relatively fine with other dogs though).
He was put to sleep eventually.

Personally, he was probably as close to a dangerous dog as I've known closely.......haven't known any dangerous Rotties or GSD's, but that's just my experience.
I had a Staff attack my elderly mongrel once in a vicious attack and as a result I hate that breed with a passion - and yes I've known good ones since, and I know they can be lovely. But I would never have one and never trust one, and can't see myself ever changing my mind on that, having seen the power and aggression they are capable of.

[ QUOTE ]
I seem to keep repeating myself but if you want me to do so again then, ALL dogs can bite but I've owned and worked with collies all my life and known hundreds of them. I have never known a working collie to bite anyone but I accept it could happen the same as any other dog. A collie simply has not got the weight or strength to kill an adult, a rottweiler has surely you can accept that if nothing else ? If you can show me a case where this has happened then i will accept that i am wrong, ok ?

[/ QUOTE ]

well ive been bitten by a collie on the face - and it WAS a working one.

i was about 11 - and i believe it could well of knocked me over and caused more damage - so sorry im not seeing your view on your collies.

I have been bitten several times by Border Collies (never by a Rough Collie strangely) and I have been bitten by one labrador. The Collies both walked from infront around and behind me. One belonged to the local Dog Trainer. I now fear Border Collies but I do not fear Rotties, Dobes or GSD's. Border Collies are considered faithful and gentle. However, in EVERY breed you will find some are truly gentle and safe and some a nightmare and danger. We should not automatically assume that this dog attacked or attempted to harm his owner, simply because of his breed.

I have sat and read every comment regarding this topic.
Its such a shame people make a judgement on something and put in into a type and regard all the same species in that group (not making myself clear

).
I know Rotties have made the headlines a few times recently and people have said why have these killer dogs, why breed them and so on, i myself have never owned this particular breed of dog but i have owned a Doberman and im on my secon GSD who at 10 months old weighs just over 5 stone and looks like king kong.
I think its unfair for people to ask why people choose to own these sorts of breeds, we do so because we want to. My next door neighbour owns 2 ratty chihuahas (no offense), i dont question why she wants to own them when they are biting at my legs when i go to her house. No they might not be able to kill me but if i put my hand by them they could certainly do nerve damage if they caught my wrist in the wrong way. She finds it funny, but does she find it funny if my 5 stone GSD nips her ankles or bite her hands..... no.
I have also tried lying on the floor and Lily paws at my head to get me up (wont be trying that again in a hurry).
My mum has a Border Collie who wouldnt think twice at biting somebody as she is a very nervous dog, but Lily would lick them to death.

Sorry she looks a bit spooky with her eyes.

Just because you hear of some dogs of a particular breed biting doesnt mean they should all be condemed

She is a gorgeous dog. I wish I knew some GSDs. They don't seem to be very popular over here. Sadly, my only experience of the breed has been through farm dogs I knew as a child (inevitably kept on long chains and trained to snarl/bark if you so much as looked at them).

Which proves, doesn't it, that it's all about ownership?

I often take my camera to the local park where--shock! horror!--'dangerous' breeds abound. Unsurprisingly, they're just dogs that love to play like any other.

The park attracts between 300-500 dogs between 7-9am on the weekends, many of them Pits, Rotties, Dogos, Mastiffs etc. The most assertive, scrappiest dog of them all (I'm deadly serious!): Nico

I don't think anybody said the whole breed should be condemned and i have said repeatedly that there are good and bad dogs of every breed.
I myself like GSDs and not chihuahas (sp) . I guess we all have our own experiences and maybe it would be better if people could try instead to look at the bigger picture. Just a thought

I think this whole thread is pointless to be honest.

We ALL know loads of large dogs that are really gentle and dopey. AND we all know loads of small dogs that are absolute demons.

We ALL know loads of small dogs that are sweet as sugar candy. AND we all know loads of large dogs that scare the beejeesus out of us.

Let's just all be sensible about the whole thing shall we?

bonny i find you very sarcastic and annoying you your self was slating rotties much earlier in this post and now you say no one was condemming them!your statment was only rotties and pit bull kill people and refused to see the bigger picture that other dogs are capable of killing and the fact that the dog prob did not kill the man, i told my auntie who is not into dogs and has been very cautious of the breed what happened to the man and asked her opinion on it and she also said the dog was trying to help and the head injuries are most likely from when he fell so if a non dog person who is wary of the breed can see it why cant you?????

nope, still don't see what her auntie has to do with it !
why don't we just wait for the inquest and for the facts instead of going round in circles, its pointless - everybody has their own opinions, isn't that how it should be ??

My, how disheartening to read that someone would condemn a breed of dogs as they deem the 'capable of killing an adult'. In these cases i feel only humans are to blame with either being irresponsible or ignorant in training these animals. It is seemed to be almost endearing and 'entertaining' when a little dog acts aggressively as people assume it could not do any harm. However, a big dog behaving like that would be considered dangerous.

Any medium sized dog is 'capable' of killing a human as is any human capable of killing another. I think we have all raed/heard of more cases of people stabbing/beating each other to death than we hear of dogs killing people (and we're supposexd to be of 'higher intelligence'!

Dogs aggressive behavious stems from how they are brought up/taught and can come frok their parents and their human 'trainers'.

Think back to the labrador who ripped it's owner's face off - surely labradors are meant to be 'gentle' dogs?

In my mind any dog with a sizeable jaw can kill but the majority don't. No doubt this dog in this attack was shot as they so often are. It's a shame, sadly a dog cannot reason, his owner could have been in terrible distress following a fall and maybe, just maybe the dog did not understand? Dogs are not vindictive and do not take revenge, they just act on instint and learned behaviour.

Sorry but all these cases upset me cos it's automatically the dogs fault. What about the thousands of dogs of so called 'aggressive breeds' that have never shown an ounce of aggression?

Well, that's my lot - it's a subject I feel very strngly about. If you own a dog you take the responsibility and the risk.

If you ask me..The attacks are probably just as common in every breed, but because of the physical strength and shape of dogs such as rotties, staffies ect, they do more damage than the majority of dogs, hence why its those attacks which go to press.

I've never met a rottie, but a friend used to have one and she was never aggressive (from what she said), and I used to work at a racing yard with a staffy who was just LOVELY, very soppy..

Our old collie, who came from working stock, admittingly we shouldn't have bought him as a house dog (but don't blame me for this, I was 3 when we got him!), and maybe due to lack of physcial exercise as he came off a farm, (though he did get at least 2 hours of exercise a day) he was very possesive and could be aggressive. He had other issues too, just unbelievable chasing, I believe my parents had someone who trains police dogs come to work with him because of his behaviour but thats irrevelvant that was more due to his hyper activitiy ness.

When I was 4 or so, I was ill off school, he came to play with me but I was lieing on the sofa. Looking back, he might have reacted simarily to the dog in this article, but I can't remember it well, I always just assumed he got nippy when I didn't play back and ended up biting me, almost taking out my eye. He didn't get PTS, but did later as he got hit by a car. Now I have a border collie who is the complete opposite of him, she tires after 1 hour walk and is the soppiest thing on earth.

Not sure what I'm trying to point out, maybe just that these two dogs were the same breed but so very different. Toby would take insant dislike to certain people and growl at them, whereas Tara wouldn't dream of hurting anyone and just loves everyone to bits.

Good grief I'll explain it to you then, her auntie is afraid of dogs, so surely the (wrongly) stereotypical nasty rottweiler would be an ample enough reason to slate the dog in this case, but she didnt she used common sense to determine what most likely happened.

I'm sorry but I've got to disagree -we've had our border collie since he was a puppy and he's NEVER been trust worthy - he's far too nervous - He's a lovely dog but nothing/noone has made him so untrustworthy - it's just in his nature!

Ive just sat and read through tihs entire post, as an owner of a large breed dog (Rhodesian ridgebacks) I am very shocked at the amount of ignorance! The craziest dog i ever knew was a Collie my parents owned as i grew up. It hated men, bit several of my friends & my sisters, would never let anyone in the house & was eventually PTS because of it. I have owned various dogs all my life & without a doubt my ridgies are the most loyal intelligent non aggresive breed i have owned. Dont get me wrong, I absolutely believe that if a burgler entered my house or if i was out walking & attacked my dog would protect me, It is after all one of the many reasons i have them. As that has not happened to date, they have never shown the slightest aggression towards any human, they are too intelligent to attack without reason. I trust them 100%, they are fantastic with my kids & part of our family. I really dont care what anyone else may assume or say etc, I know from my own personal experience that my dogs are 100% loyal & trustworthy. However if you care to google a pic they look menacing but ive yet to read or see anything regarding attcks from these dogs. It is my choice! As is owning horses and everytime i walk round the back end of mine am i not taking my life into my own hands?I mean really, how dangerous are horses, they have more power in one leg than any large dog and are capable of inflicting serious damage without even trying! Yet we all own them knowing this because its our choice. How many horse owners on here say my horse would never kick/bite/pull/ barge? Yet as a formidable four legged beast i am much more at risk of injury from my equines than my dogs! How many riders have been killed recently. Do we see headlines like killer horses strike again? I rest my case.

It's not a very good case !!!
I don't think anybody ever mentioned rhodesian ridgebacks amd theres not really a comparsion to be made between horses and dogs. Its a bit like saying more people die every year because we have cars - this was a post about dogs, its a separate issue.

[ QUOTE ]
I know for a fact that the dog killed him, how can you say a loyal dog could accidently do that trying to wake him up or whatever ? do you think its just chance that the same breed of dog keeps being in the news for these attacks ???

[/ QUOTE ]
No.
I think an attack by a rottie is better at grabbing headlines then say,a lab.

I can't remember stats off top of me head, but think it's somewhere in the region of 8,000 registered rotties in 2006.How many attacks have there been?
10?20?
Yes,one death by a danerous og is one too many, but ahandfull of dangerous dogs out of thousends hardly means the whole breed is dangerous!

Of course there is - you seem to think no-one should have rotties because of their ability to inflict serious injury, well by your own statement that also applies to horses and yes cars!! The fact is every day people choose to be around dangerous animals/things. We ride horses because we love to be around them - and yes there is a chance a horse will kick us and shatter our skulls BUT we accept the risk because thats our hobby, our pet and our friend. I dont know many rottweilers that could kill you with one blow - a horse can!

well said welshrarebit although until bonny has taken blinkers off we are all wasting our time as bonny seems to have forgotten wat they have posted at least most people on this post are sensible to see the dog in its true light and not what some want to think of it as.bonny is only against rotties because they have a fear of the breed as admitted.

I wasnt saying anybody had mentioned ridgebacks! but as you seem intent on condeming large breeds who are capable of killing then my dogs would fit that class! you should read back what you have posted. you said you dont understand why anybody would want a dog ( like a rottie)big enough & capable of killing a human. It is you who do not understand that as we are all individuals, we all have a right to our own opinions , we also have freedom of CHOICE. What you think about large dogs really does seem narrow minded. Not all large dogs are killers, you seem to imply that that is the case. Your arguement is flawed in my opinion & yes that is my opinion & im perfectly entitled to it, As you are yours. I will never see it your way or you mine.
Your argument seems to be based on the fact that because of the size & strength of large dogs they are potentially dangerous & capable of causing death. Then by the same arguement many other things that would be potentially dangerous & capable of causing death such as horses would surley come into it? so do we exclude everyone from owning anything potentially dangerous just in case on a rare occasion serious injury or death may occur?
