Management of arthritic hocks...

Exercise and being out the stable as much as possible I found affects my horse the most tried all sorts of joint supplements and nothing really made an improvement

I just have the problem that when acting like 4yr old rather than a 17 yr old out on a ride a few weeks ago he wanted to go for a gallop.... and tore we his check ligament so is on min 6 weeks box rest; and out of work for 6 months so not sure how his hock will be fairing then

Sorry I've not been back to this! Many thanks for all of the advice given and stories shared. That's really helpful.

Am thinking of getting a magnet rug and will watch how she goes. I do worry despite the fact that she is sounds as a pound and loving life!

I did phone the vet this week, as I had some more questions and he was so helpful (Fellowes Farm are the best). I wanted a 'number' put on her condition as I was struggling to understand the severity and he said it's not helpful to look at it that way as you must assess the horse on the day but if I wanted a number then prior to treatment he would have said
2-3/10. I wish he hadn't mentioned the three :) it's too close to five. I am silly.

She'll go back in for injections again in Jan, so it will be good to have another vet review.

Arion had mild arthritic changes to the right hock - 3 cortisone injections over 3.5 years and vet reckons the hock is now fused - he really struggled to get the last injection in but managed it - no problems since then and massive improvement in his way of going behind since removing his back shoes a few motnhs ago - dont know it that is connected or just coincidence
