I am sure this has been asked before, but a search picks up threads from 2012. So I will ask again for some more updated information.

Hermosa's tail clumps into thick rastalocks. For years, I maintained Gypsum's tail with Johnson's baby oil, but I think there must be something better. As per a suggestion, I tried sweet almond oil. Weirdly, it worked brilliantly for Fin -- his tail looks the best it ever has -- but it made Hermosa's tail sticky, which was much, much worse. I just shampooed it today to get all the crap out and start again.

Looking for other brilliant ideas.

Oils never impressed me with my last horse and his thick (Spanish) tail. Washing it and using conditioner made it really nice (human conditioner). Otherwise I used Eqyss Survivor and Carr Day & Martin mane and tail spray. I would've rather used natural oils and whatnot, but that's what worked best for him. I didn't use them soo often.

Another vote for Carr and day and Martin - I believe it is a silicone spray, keeps the hair from tangling very effectively.
A word to the wise, don't apply it to the mane if you intend to ride bareback, as it will spread itself onto the withers/back and provide an interesting ride! (Yes that is the voice of experience 😂)

A lady at our tack shop suggested cheap furniture polish spray it’s a silicon spray I have tried it and it works but smells like you’ve just polished your horse 🤣

Baby oil in a spray bottle used sparingly. The key to our cob’s big tail that seeks into tendrils is combing.

Canter mane and tail or Absorbine show sheen.
B has a very full tail. I hand tease out any ringlets (been bad the last couple of days as breezy) and then puff spray on each section.
I never attempt to brush out spiral tangles, any brush is only used once it's all detangled.
If I keep on top of it and weather isnt v wet or windy, then 5 mins once a week is fine to keep it manageable.
When I was on box rest end last year, it took me a good 45 mins or more to get it back to glory.

Always prick up my ears when a product that I've never come across gets the thumbs up from forum regulars 🙂.

Cowboy Magic detangler - how do you use it? It's not available in a spray bottle. A squirt on a clean wet tail and massage it in?

can anyone recommend one that has a robust spray mechanism. I find the liquid is much of a muchness but the spray quickly stops working in different products I’ve used.

I used Cowboy Magic many years ago when I lived in the US. It worked well on my horse's huge Shire tail.

I did once use it on my own hair when I was a student and regretted it. The stuff made a horrible, oily mess that took ages to wash out.

I think some of you know of what I speak -- Hermosa's tail puts itself into these twists, not like any horse I have had before. Gypsum's tail was voluptuous, but stayed straight even with my occasional half-assed brushing. The hairs on Hermosa's stick together and then twist around each other until you have long, matted dreadlocks, and pulling each one apart with my fingers is a little bit soul destroying. I'm not entertaining the idea of keeping it permanently in a braid, because she's turned out overnight and needs it to whisk flies. But yeah, some tail-maintenance regime that keeps it in okay shape (without tons of work...we're not showing so doesn't have to be perfect) would be sweet.

I shove a small blob in my hand and work it in to the tail. You only need a bit as it goes a long way.
