Do any of you HHO'ers know how I can put mane and tail detangler on the mane/forelock of a head shy horse? My mare is fine when I put it on her tail and the bottom end of her mane, but she is pretty head shy and she wont let me anywhere near her head with the bottle.

I can't even get a brush through her mane its that knotty so how could I apply mane and tail on her?

Mince pies to all who help :D

Could you spray it on to your hand first? I cant get near my boy with a spray bottle of any description so I normally spray it on to a brush and then work through his mane and tail. If you can just get the stuff on then you should be able to work a comb through it. :)

I use a sponge/cloth to get it onto the tricky parts of the mane. I like the curry comb idea too, if she'll let you do that.

ETA: Work your way gradually up the mane, so that she gets used to the idea of you working nearer her head.

spray on your hands and just rub into the mane and leave for a couple of mins, then go in with a plastic curry comb, don't go in straight on, work the comb along the side of her head, gently, I always find that headshy horses are easier if you kind of creep up the side, and not go straight in from the front. I still find that Canter Mane and tail is still the best for detangling (when it comes to horse products) but failing that any silicone based human detangler... would be good. Don't force it, Even if you dont get it all done at once, it should be easier to carry on the next day...
