The midges are horrendous, worse ever.Last year my mare kept all her mane and tail with a Boett on. This year she has already lost clumps of her mane (although the skin does not look red and sore). Does anyone know how I can 1 encourage it to grow and 2 prevent any more from falling out?

Thanks in advance

Does she still have her Boett on? Must have started the chain earlier in the year before you rugged up.

Ive hogged the Shire which makes it easier to treat, but that doesnt suit every horse. I always swear by Benzyl Benzoate, but havnt been able to get any. Using Itch Stop Salve Complete atm as a precautionary.

What you could do is electric fence her favourite scratching tree.

sorry, but if you had an itch how tortured would you feel if someone stopped you scratching?

Once you allow a sweet-itch horse to scratch, it starts the terrible cycle. They can rub so much that sores appear and get infected, vet needed for steroid injections, kept in etc. etc.

Like any horse, they can still roll which would be healthier than getting sores from a blackthorn tree and ripping £235 Boett.

Katy..seriously thats exactly what you have to do. My sweet itch cob has worked out exactly where to groom his companion so he gets a good tail scratch back. They can also have a roll and scratch on the floor where they can't do them selves any damage. Believe me, a sweet itch sufferer can never relieve his itch..he will just scratch till he bleeds...

My mare is in her Boett all time except when ridden then she is smothered in Itch stop Salve. She is in at dawn and dusk, though admittedly have to ride around then. I have not actually seen her itch and she has no sores more just bald patches where the mane has come out.

I need something to stop the mane falling out further and encourage rapid growth

i went to the chemist to buy some benzil benzoate and the woman was most unhelpful nearly to the point of rudeness.she said it cannot be purched anymore and offered no alternative.when i got home and looked on web about it,i found out it is used to treat scabies!!!!!
good job i`m not a sensative soul with a `personal problem`.i thought chemists were supposed to help you and be approachable.
anyway, pony doing well with snuddyhood and electric fencing which i use anyway.

Mine would rub until they were bleeding and destroy rugs if I let him scratch. Much kinder not to let him!

He can rub on the ground, but cannot put 600kg of acute pressure against something like a tree....

I am wondering if it is from wearing the horrible rugs with full neck over winter before the Boett, Had to buy a v check martingale so not to have a neck strap resting on neck

Could be..or it could be the Boett although I doubt it. What about a mane saver under the Boett. Also I MegaTek do a rebuilder that I've heard good things about..

I would recomend megatek. Although my horse doesnt have the same problem he was getting bad rug rubs on his shoulders. I bought some of this and used it neat and within two weeks the hair had grown back. Honestly!!!! It was amazing! Obviously for the mane it would take longer but its well worth the money IMO.

Do you mean how long the bottle lasts? If so its a decent size bottle. You can use it neat, which i did or you can water it down. Its like a conditioner and depending on the size of area you need to treat you dont use much. To estimate if i used it neat on small rug rubs everyday it would probably last me four months? To be honest i have only used it for two weeks and have stopped as the hair has already grown back. For manes and tails it recomends washing them about three times a week and then putting the conditioner on and either leaving in or washing out. Megatek do other products to help with skin conditions so it might be worth looking at the website to get the right product.
