Mane growth

How much and how quickly a mane grows is genetic, the same as people.

You can help with things like, keeping the hair in good condition to prevent early snapping; things like: not using high neck rugs (over heats the hair follicles), Not using silicone-containing sprays; massaging the hair roots with product (take your pick - coconut oil, olive oil, megatek...)

Some people don't brush or comb, but I found that with good hair, brushing and combing don't make any difference if you are gentle and use a suitable conditioning spray; you are always going to lose some hair as the horse sheds it naturally (same as people)

Can't supplementing the diet with biotin also help make the hair stronger?

Only if the horse / pony is deficient in biotin IMO, which they shouldn't be if they are healthy and have a decent diet as the microbes in their hind gut should produce plenty of it.

OP - it depends why they have short hair IME. If its because the coat is poor, especially if there is a bad / unknown history, then yes biotin / vitamin-E / other coat supplements might help. If the mane has been rubbed, cut, chewed off then topical stuff might help along with management changes. Alternatively they may just have a short mane, my daughters ponies mane is just short and although his coat and hoof quality has improved since we got him his mane hasn't grown any longer.

When I got mine he was in quite poor condition. His feet didnt grow and his hair had an almost crispy texture. He was a traditional with a huge long mane but it all started snapping off due to the condition so had to be hogged. Hes now grows ridiculous amount of hair and hoof!

Hes on a good quality diet, low sugar, high fibre and lots of oil. He gets mineral balancer and a big dose of salt. He looks good! He has a proper shine to his coat now. If i stop the mineral balancer his feet stop growing again, so I assume that it is helping his feet and hair growth.

It cant do any harm and may well help so has to be worth a try :)
