My horses mane is awful. Its short and straight, so looks fine when loose, but its very thick so its a nightmare to plait, especially in the middle part of his neck.
So it desparately needs thinning, but he absolutely won't let me pull it. Any ideas how I can thin it out without sending him (& therefore me) into orbit.
Thanks

I bought a tail rake. I can pull mine's mane but not his tail. However did his mane as well.
The best thing I have ever bought, just be careful as it's easy to get carried away

I second the tail rake! I used it on mine who is a warmblood with a really thick mane and he hates it being pulled. worked a treat! I just used it on the underside though, so i didn't break any hairs off on the top.

Yep those rakes are brilliant, you can get the wider or the thinner ones, dont rake over the top, do it from underneith, like sandwitch, hand on top, mane in the middle and rake underneith and pull/rake though in a downwards action.

Only do a bit at a time so you can keep monitering how thin it goes etc.

You can buy them from most tack shops but you can get the same peice of equitment from petshops in the dog section if they supply good grooming products for half the price!...I went and bought a full metal one for about £15.00 and discovered my dad had a couple at home that he uses to thin the dogs coats with!

I did Miraed's mane with it and she cant stand her's been pulled!

I have done the taqil raqke thing - but find after a few weeks or so you get bits sticking up which are a nightmare to plait with........

Thought at first this was a great idea but now havn't second thoughts!
sorry
