Mane pulling/cutting problems

Im at a real lose as to what to do with Archie's mane!

He is looking abit like a hippy at the mo as his mane is getting abit long and wild.

He wont let me near it withl scissors and pulling is a big no no!
He is litterally dangerous if you try and do anything with his mane. He is fine when I brush it and Ive tried disguising it while brushing, but he soon catches on and starts throwing himself around.
Please help me, apart from sedating him, theres nothing else I can do!

I have the same problem, I have to twitch my mare, do it really quickly, make it quite short and then I dont have to do it again for months! It does work tho!
 
We used to have a horse you could ride, and sit there pulling he's mane, but if you was on the ground he would kill you, even better if you worked up a sweat on him as it comes out really easy then, bugger it just hog him !

I had to sedate her until I got this comb and its fantastic .

Costs about £20 but well worth it .

My mare hates her mane being pulled. I have tried a solo comb but I cant really get on with it.

I have used a mane comb for the past couple of years and its brill, even for right or left handed people.

http://www.aivly.com/shop/12/150/index.htm - Its the 5th one down, you can buy stanley blades from a diy shop. I find this makes a nice natural look.

Its abit like a small metal curry comb but with blades .

That looks good, so do you just brush the mane as normal and the comb does the rest??
 
That one that lotty has posted , is very like the rake/comb that I have , you just comb/brush and the blades do the rest, although if that does the job at that price then def worth a try .

The one I have is fantastic and it looks as if the mane has been pulled , but without all the fuss and pain that a normal pulling comb does .

Plus it takes 5 mins tops , Sorry dont have it here in the house but il try and get a pic of it later on . But would def give that other one a try x
 
I have a similar problem with one of my lot so have been interested in these replies! Might have to try one of these combs, but just wanted to check, do you literally just comb the mane from the top evenly? Or do you have to press harder to cut at some point? Also do you do it on the side the mane lies or on the other side? Does it really work as well as pulling? I need to be able to plait her in the summer really and he has quite a thick mane!
 
I have to put my mare in cross ties to pull her mane - they can't rear/barge or easily kick you - she thrashes about for a minute and then gives in.
Mind you, I only do it once a season then tidy up with a dog comb - if you're plaiting regularly they lose quite a bit of hair anyway!
If you do use cross ties make sure they're the proper thing with a quick release clip at one end and secured to something solid.
 
I once plaited the horse up with really long plaits (not balled up though) and every day did one plait using chalk or something to measure where the previous days trim was too. I used scissors and then a solocomb, (or pulled if it was possible, sometimes he would let you others it was a no go area) but you can do it however you like it's just that he had a long thin mane. It meant that he was never very stressed as it wasn't for long every day and it became a habit. Also because it was plaited before and after trimming you couldn't really tell too much that is had been pulled.

I know exactly where you're coming from and how scary/dangerous it is. I used to do mine whenever the vet was out anyway to do something to them, jabs, dental, whatever and I would ask him to inject some ACP. £7.06 + VAT for a 14.2 pony. Sedalin gel wasn't enough for mane pulling, I did it once, but it took 3 of us, 2 twitching him and he still put up a huge fight. Then I would pull it as short as I could get away with. I don't honestly think you have any other option if you want a neat mane...
 
A friend of mine uses 'ice cool gel' (the stuff that you use for muscle injuries- human) as it numbs the neck, they should'nt feel a thing!!

Also pulling manes in cold weather can be painfull for horses as their pores are closed, try pulling after work and on a warm sunny day
 
use a rug with neck cover then youll soon be left with hardly any mane. saw a programme once where they rubbed clove oil on the neck first to numb it.
 
i always try and do a mane after riding when the neck is warmer. If you are pulling, or combing, any hair will come out easier when skin is warm and relaxed.
