OK - 1st stab ever at tidying Sunny's mane using (a) a solo comb - only partially successful and (b) a mane and tail rake held blade side up. Comments please - I can take it! Do I need to put a brown paper bag over Sunny's head until it grows out? Or is it passable as a first go? Any tips on what would make it better? Opinions at the yard varied!

I think you could take a bit more off, perhaps a few hairs at a time the old fashioned way rather than the solo comb so you don't get such a straight edge?
He looks like he isn't too sure himself if he likes his new hairdo!!

it looks cut to me.

imho i would not expect to do the task in 1 day.

i would do a bit over several weeks so as all the underneath hair is at different stages of growth.

i think pulling manes is an on going job and is a case of `little and often`

I would take more off, an no offence but I think it looks scissored...

use the solo comb at an angle like this \ and only do the ends, you are less likly to get the scissored look.

I have a hatred of solo combs, I am yet to see a nice mane done with them. Proper pulling all the way for me I'm afraid.

To me it looks cut and it looks longer at the wither end. He looks like he has quite a fine mane that should lie well (unlike franks which is very coarse.

This is Franks when I pulled it a couple of months back

Its gotten a bit longer now an I am deciding whether to do it again (it was very long before!!)

it looks as though its been cut and agree forlock should be a V shape, i also prefer pulling combs as it makes the mane look more natural. But theres def no need to put a bag over his head lol looks good for your first attempt

BOF, I'd take the whole length off, apart from the forelock.

Your horse has such a lovely neck, it will really enhance their looks. Personally I'd cut it off, then pull short. It looks sort of neither one thing nor another at the moment.......

Oh wow! Thanks all! Didn't know about the V shape for forelock so will do that today. Good idea about the solo comb at an angle too. Sunny is my very special boy and he coped brilliantly with my first ever clipping attempt 2 yrs ago - complete with huge heart shaved in his bum! Everyone said he looked embarrassed by it and I should only shave it in his blind side lol. Thanks for all the help and honesty and advice guys xxx

i'd do it shorter too, about the length it is at withers, so say 3"-4".
i use scissors held upright to snip into the mane, i do this again and again to get a short but slightly raggedy-ended look. you could practise on the ends as it is, if you're going to do it shorter anyway. if the mane's too thick i use the tail rake upside down to think the underneath of the mane, if it's the right thickness i just use scissors on the ends.
btw, i do forelocks straight across too, always have! easier to get a good plait then.

Solo combs are ok if used properly, you are supposed to do it like you are pulling, ie a few hairs at a time, take comb as close to roots as poss then snip. I then shorten with a thinning knife and my thumb if neccessary.
