Mane Pulling Question

My geldings mane has never been cut. He's two and a half. As a 'going to be' hunter horse, he of course has to have it pulled and shortened. I've always been taught to use the dreaded scissors and blunt it off :eek3::eek3:

So, how do you go about shortening a long mane without blunting it?

I've just done a very long thick mane with a solo comb and rake it was so easy. There are a couple of good YouTube videos you can watch if you want first but it really is very quick and simple

Takes normal craft knife blades so easy to keep sharp ones handy. They also mean horses get used to the comb action so eventually when it is just a matter of keeping it tidy you can pull a few hairs each time you groom.

Personally I would cut it with scissors to 2in longer than you want it and then pull it properly.

I really dont like any of these rakes and things but thats personal preferance.

I bought one of these to try instead of solo combs (due the cost of replacing the solo comb all the time!!) but could not get on with it at all!! Give me the solo comb (and it's price tag unfortunately) anytime!! I've never 'cut' a mane before pulling it. Always done long manes as I would any other... If the horse will take traditional pulling I'd just start with that, if not use the solo comb. A hint I would say is if pulling traditionally get some clove oil from the pharmacist and apply it to the skin of the mane area. Use gloves when doing so as it has a 'numbing' affect.

Pull it properly, every time. It's just personal preference but I loathe manes that have been cut and tails that have been clipped instead of properly pulled - they look dreadful.
