My boy has a very thick unruly mane and am desperate to thin it out but he hates his mane being pulled. I don't plait him up that often but do need to do so about once a month....question is would a mane rake be just the job? Have read that they are good but not if you need to plait the mane.....have used a solo comb, thining scissors etc to no avail. Anyone got any experiences, how is best to use it and which one to buy. Have seen Smart Mane rakes, Oster... and also they come in fine, medium, coarse etc - help !! He is an ID x TB so it's quite thick and tough! Thanks in advance for all your help. (also in New Lounge)

I have two from TRI (they're just like the Smart Mane rakes) - I'd go for a medium

Nnnnnoooooooooooo! It'll grow back all bushy and look even worse!!!

Grit your teeth and pull it, and if you can't so it yourself then get someone else to do it - from someone who has a horse with a mane that looks like it exploded and tried all these things! (in fact, one time I asked what I shoud do with it, and someone told me to hog it again. I was 'what do you mean again?? I've never hogged ot!!)

You know what Monty would say? 'Next time you go to the hairdresser ask her to pull it out by the roots!' Actually I have tried various products which don't work, but I love my horse's mane and if I don't have to plait him I will let him keep it.

I use one (Oster I think - fine blade). Despite all the comments to the contrary about them making dreadfully spikey manes when you plait I have found them really good. Use them conservatively along with natural pulling and they create a good look. I plait and am quite fussy about appearance and still get neat plaits.

I use the oster one too (medium) on my ID x TB mare. Do be careful that you dont over use it because it will be difficult to plait but they are really good, worth to money and mine has stayed sharpe for about 2 years now.

Try mixing equal quantity of Oil of Cloves, Rubbing Alcohol and water togeter, shake well and rub into the roots of the mane - it numbs the skin so that pulling is not so painful.

Pulling a few hairs out everyday helps too as it spreads the discomfort and the mane once sorted stays smart all the time.

no they don't!

I have been using mine (medium blade ) for over a year now, mane has never grown back bushy and horse certainly happier.

Great on tails too
