Do any of you use a mane thinning rake? What do you think of them? Pro's / con's?

I'm thinking about getting one.

If you rate them which one have you got and how much was it? I have seen them priced from about £15 TO £35.

I have a Clippersharp one and it is fab - medium blade. Most of my yard use it now, and you cannot tell the difference between the pulled manes and the raked manes...it just takes patience and practise :)

I borrowed a friends so i don't know how much it was but it is really good the only con is that it can make your horses/ponies mane a bit like a bog brush when it starts to grow back underneath! Its very easy to use just pull the mane the opposite way and brush it with the rake like you would normally comb it! x

As Hannah 123 has said. Great to start off with, lovely mane. But when the "cut off" bit starts to grow back get the bog bush effect. But not sure if you would get that with pulling as never got chance to pull our horses mane as she would rather kill you first. Going to get her sedated and then done i think next time as don't like it when it grows back.

mane rakes are fine for a quick fix! but sadly when the raked bits grow back you wil get mega spike! its good for shortening a relatively thin mane, taking the ends off! as for a thick mane the regrowth is hellish! if yuo have the mane from hell then the best options are to pull properly, or hog!

I have a Derby House one and Oster (there really is no difference), I only use it combined with a pulling comb and thinning scissors on manes I intend to plait. Other manes I use it alone and it's worked fine, I haven't had any regrowth issues but wouldn't use it on a horse that needs plaiting for comps unless combined with other methods :).

I have the Smart Tails medium blade one and it has done a lovely job today on my horse's mane and tail. They look as if they have been pulled. But echo the bristly regrowth, espeically the mane. I usually end up snipping the bristles between the plaits with scissors. Pulling would be better but its hard on the person and the horse - with the mane rake, my horse actually enjoyed having it done, relaxed with his neck down, as if he was having a massage, and was really relaxed afterwards! Didn't even need to tie him up, never mind twitch him.

I have a mane rake for a horse that hates having its mane pulled - they are a God send for that and, after practise, I can make her mane look immaculate in just 10 minutes....but........as said above, don't be tempted to let it grow out - it will look a mess! But brilliant for a horse with a thick mane. I also use it to pull her tail and get great results from that too. :)
