mane rubbing already!!! help!

Hi, i have noticed that one of my lots mane is already being rubbed out by his rugs, i am confident that his rugs fit correctly i think (MT turnout for 17.1 ISH???), what can i do to

a. repair the damage

b. stop it happening

and help much appreciated! is that equitek rebuilder any good???

It just happens to some horses. Sometimes a lycra neck cover can help, sometimes it makes it worse. In all honesty if it's that important to you that he has a mane then leave the neck cover folded back or preferably buy a diff rug with no neck!

Most rugs with an attached neck will rub because of the seam and/or the horses movement. Try a rug with seperate neck or no neck at all

Look into getting a rug with a separate neck cover as then you can take off as appropriate to reduce the damage. Or try a lycra neck cover under the turnout rug
Personally never found that any of the rebuilder products work but if you find one that does post back!

Snuggy hoods stopped this problem with my mare & sometimes I'd plait the mane up (but not rolling them up) before putting a rug or hood over, this seems to help also.

Wipe the lining of the neck rug daily to remove any grease that has attached itself to the rug - thats often the cause of mane rubbing. Also if you are sewing inclined get a piece of thick foam aboout 200 x 250 mm x 30mm and cover with parka nylon sew a strip of hook velcro to one side and the fluffy piece to the wither of the cover then attach the two together. The will keep the cover off the wither and the base of the neck.

i got a piece of silk (think lovely burgundy silk teddy) and cut a large piece out and stitched it inside neck cover and hey presto, no more rubs

Can you do without the neck cover? They rub Star's mane as well, so I gave up with Combo rugs. She has a Standard rug, with a detachable neck so that ithe weather is totally awful I can put the neck as and when it's needed.
