don't touch it at all! don't use tail combs or stiff brushes, if you have to brush it for some reason use a body brush. a lady very into showing at our yard never touched her horses tail unless she was going to a show, and then gave it a proper clean. =]

I need my arabs to have nice long tails for showing, so theres have a tail wrap on them to protect them and this is re-appiled approximately 2 weekly. I just re-plait it and very very rarely do I brush it. To get any knots out I use cowboy magic de-tangler, so brushes and combs are never yanked through tails or manes.

I show my gypsy cob so tail on the floor, forelock to end of nose and long mane are essential.

I try to avoid it getting too dirty. In summer it is washed every couple of weeks but with a very gentle shampoo and conditioned. In winter, I hot towel the roots.

I put megatek on the roots - I mix it 50 - 50 with water, rub in and then comb through and leave it in. I do this two - three times a week. This encourages strong and healthy fast hair growth.

I also use survivor detangler on the hair which is the best detangler on the market - and I think I have tried them all. It is also good for condition.

His hair is kept plaited but not tight at the roots and it is also bagged. In summer I leave the top third of his tail out for flies.

I never brush the hair, I put on survivor and then go through it with a wide tooth detangler comb - from Avon so don't pull the hair.

All the products I use can be bought from tailgator.co.uk.

I used to work on a show jumping yard many years ago, tails weren't brushed unless going to a show and that was after seperating each hair with your fingers and if you came across a knot you could sort it out that way rather than brushing which would have just broken it.

I sometimes do my horses tail with my fingers as above, I find it looks much fuller, I do have one of those oster brushes which are lovely and providing the tail doesn't get knotted doesn't break the hairs when you brush it, I have used Wahl spray main and tail stuff which was really nice and didn't need to be applied every day, also used some of the Alva range found the same, didn't need to be put on every day

I very rarely brush out a tail - preferring to keep it tangle free with my fingers. Second the NG and Alva. It's great stuff.

My horse's tail is currently banged very short on his hocks to help keep it mud free - but will be allowed to get longer over the summer.

I really, really need to do something with my horse's tail - I was going to lop it off to above hock length for the winter ... I didn't and regret it now!

I've been spraying it every so often with mane & tail spray - but I think it is beyond that now, I think a good old wash, scrub and de-tangle will be the only solution - then I'll lop some of it off!!

i havent been brushing it so will keep doing that- less work is fab!

will try the conditioners and megatek..

thanks! am just fed up of her having a foal bog brush of a tail. i look at everyone else at comps with their long flwoing tails very jealously!

V useful post. When I bought my horse 18 months ago he lost the last section of his tail as some !!!!!! had left a tail bandage on tight so the hair at the bottom of his dock all dropped off.

In 18 months the middle of his tail has only grown to just above his hocks so can you run this by me again :-

What will promote hair growth?

If I dont brush it out how to I get the shavings and tangles out - pretty please ??

Yep mine have tail wraps on, I also spray them liberally with WOW whitener, it keeps them nice and white - brilliant product!
