Hello,
My mare has got a very thick mane and I need to get it thinned out a bit so I can plait it! I've been using a solo comb but was wondering what other people used? I'd like to get one of those combs that you simply comb through and it thins the hair rather than the way the solo comb works, not sure if they've got a name or if anyone knows what i'm on about but I've definately seen them somewhere!

They're called mane and/or tail rakes and they are very effective. You get instant results and a happy horse because no pulling. But BEWARE!!!!! They are SOOOOO effective that, especially with a brand new rake, one cheerful swipe could leave a bald patch! The trick is to comb the mane thoroughly and lay it over to the OPPOSITE side to the side it normally lies on. Then make gentle UPward strokes with the rake, from the base of the (underside) mane to the sky. Do some tiny baby strokes first to get the feel of it. I'd then comb it all back to the right side and assess how it looks. Better to have to do it 2 or even 3 times than take off too much in the first assault! If you then trim the very ends with a solo comb you will get a very professional appearance. When it starts to grow back, you will have to tackle the underside again. Good luck and piccies needed if it goes well xxx

Don't do it!!! If you can't thin it by pulling get someone else to do it for you.

If you use these 'thinning' things, it'll look lovely to start with but then it will grow back like a toilet brush!!! I speak from bitter experience.
