Mane: to chop or not to chop

My mares mane is down 11 inches below her neck so you can easily see it from the near side and forelock down to her nose, when I got her it was short yuky, now it is so much nicer. God help anyone who touches it.

For scaredy pants like me, it is the thought of a lack of a mane to grab hold of when mounting, or in an emergency. I love the look of a smartly hogged cob, but as for riding one, not so much...

I once got bashed fairly hard in the face by a hogged mane when the horse put in a huge catjump. It was quite unpleasant getting a face full of bristle.

He would look alot smarter, I agree.
It's so thick it falls on both sides, I'm not sure how I can fix it so it only falls on the correct side?

Best way I have found to to tame it all onto one side is to wash the mane, then plait into little plaits and leave it for a couple of days. Repeat until the mane behaves! 😊
